Terminator Salvation director: 'I suspect an R rating'

Terminator Salvation director McG confides that the film is likely to receive an R rating, warns game developers not to mess up the Terminator Salvation video game, and wishes Zach Snyder would hurry up and direct a new Aliens movie already.

I suspect we'll be R [rated]. The one who would care the most is Warner Bros' president of production, and he looked at me and said, "I don't care." -- McG, director of Terminator Salvation

Easing months of speculation that the upcoming Christian Bale film Terminator Salvation will receive a neutered PG-13 rating, director McG tells GamePro that he "suspects we'll be [an] R."

Read on for Sid Shuman's full Q&A with McG, and also check out our updated impressions of the new Terminator Salvation footage.

So, wow. Based on the footage you showed, it looks like you might pull this thing off. That's only my opinion, speaking as a major fan of Terminator.

Well, I'm you. I grew up on Terminator and I wouldn't want to see a sh*tty film. I know that it's the privilege of the audience to be skeptical of the guy who made Charlie's Angels, but I would counter that as a filmmaker you do what's right for any given project. I want to get away from being the cheerleader and let the film speak for itself.

If Terminator Salvation succeeds in reinvigorating the franchise, would you be interested in trying out an Alien picture? That's another classic sci-fi series that could desperately use a new perspective...

I hadn't thought of it! Who knows...It's funny that you mention that, boy would I like to see somebody like [Watchmen director] Zach Snyder say, "hey, I'm doing the new Aliens!" Guys like you and I would say, "holy sh*t!" You know what I mean?

You've talked a bit about the possibility of PG-13 versus R ratings for Terminator Salvation. Have you tip-toed any closer to a final decision on the film's rating?

We've given zero thought to the rating. There's no way Christian Bale would tolerate that - you can't tell Bale to "do it this way" to hit a particular rating. We just make the movie that we think is the most compelling, and we do it in a tasteful and elegant way. Terminator Salvation very well may be an R, but I'm not hung up if [we made a few cuts] without a compromise and it ended up being PG-13. I don't want fans to feel violated by that. Do you feel violated by The Dark Knight? I don't! But I suspect we'll be R. The one who would care the most is Jeff Robinov [Warner Bros. president of production], and he looked at me and said, "I don't care." The Matrix pictures were R, and look at what they did for Warner!

How much input did you have into the Terminator Salvation video game?

A lot, the video game follows the Barnes character. We're monitoring the game, and it has a great deal to do with this story. That also reminds me of the TV show, for example. For the film, we chose to follow the storylines of the first two films and largely let Sarah Connor Chronicles do its own thing. You have to do what's right for the larger mythology.

And that video game better be good, or I'm gonna be pissed. [laughter]

THE VERDICT by Sid Shuman Sid Shuman's Avatar The movie looked great, honestly -- and that's coming from a hardcore fan of the first two flicks. By the way, if you're a fan of Terminator, wait until you see the March issue of GamePro.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!

He He its my first time saying this.

But aside from that I think it should be R so they don't have to cut out any awesome scenes.

I have a feeling this will suck too. Whats with all these remakes of old properties. Granted, the Terminator universe is prime for some seemingly compelling concepts, but they keep missing the mark. I just saw a commercial for a "new" Friday the 13th movie, only this time it's a remake. Great.

Kubrick

I having a feeling this film will suck simply based off of McG track record and the trailer was less than stellar. It has Christian Bali which is good but he is bound to make a crappy movie someday and this may be it. But prove me wrong McG.

Zach Snyder would be good making Alien 5 but i would rather see Ridley Scott return to the franchise.

Train_of_Thought

well, it would be gay for one thing if it turned out to be PG-13. it was like AVP, first one was PG-13, 2nd one was R, but sucked even worse.

Terminator Salvation...not too excited for it. McG sucks...the Charlies Angels films were garbage and his only saving grace is We Are Marshall...and that wasnt very good either.

so i expect something loud, ludicrous, and corny......but the FX and art-design look interesting, even if they make the robots from Terminator 1 look REALLY out of date.

as for Zack Snyder....Alien 5???.....wha???....why??? i can think of several directors better fit to do something like Alien 5 but in all honesty....they SHOULD just leave the series alone, especially after Alien Resurrection, Alien Vs Predator, and AvP: Requiem....which were ALL garbage (even IF Requiem did a good job of bringing the gore back)
it would be a little "out of his league" but id like to see Danny Boyle tackle an Alien film....with 28 Days Later and Sunshine (which at times had an "Alien-vibe") under his belt....i imagine he could handle it well enough, but its too "high profile" for him to be considered.

TRUPREDATOR

after terminator 3 everyone should welcome this new one with open arms.mcg not bad.he is ok hopefully this will be the one that gets him the recoginition.and helps resurrect the franchise.along with breathing new life into it.oh im game to see the new friday the 13th remake.the guy directing it did the texas chainsaw remake which i thought was pretty good.so im sure it will be decent also.

TRUPREDATOR

as long as there is money to be made and people willing to go see something new from an originally good franchise.there will always be sequels, spin offs and remakes to be made, thats how it will always be. it comes down to the dollar.
