Sony: There's no way Xbox 360 will win in the end

SCEA chairman Kaz Hirai claims that there's no chance the Xbox 360 will reach a higher install base than the PS3 at the end of their life cycles and also bashes the Wii as not being a true competitor.

Sony confident that the PS3 will end up on top.

Sony Computer Entertainment chairman Kazuo Hirai told the Official PlayStation Magazine that Sony is confident the PlayStation 3 will ultimately sell more consoles than the Xbox 360, slamming Microsoft for making consoles that only last in the market for four or five years, while Sony's stay strong for ten years.

Kaz Hirai told OPM that Microsoft's next-generation system, the Xbox 360, is "something that lacks longevity."

After explaining how Sony's video game consoles, the PlayStation, PS2, and PS3, are all committed to ten-year life cycles, while Microsoft's consoles don't reach half that lifespan, he said

"...you do the math."

"Unless things go really bad," Hirai said. "There's no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base."

Hirai also revealed that Sony doesn't even consider the Nintendo Wii a real competitor to the PS3.

"they're a different world and we operate in our world."

THE VERDICT by Patrick Shaw Patrick Shaw's Avatar Jeez dude, those are fighting words. Seriously though, there was a time when Sony ravaged their competition in the PS/PS2 days (at least from my perspective which wasn't that of a game editor at the time), but that time is over and the playing field has been leveled quite a bit. Each console has their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and the Wii is included in that!

In other news the PSP is the number one hand held because the DS doesn't really count. I guess that back in 2004 when Sony said that they feel sorry for Nintendo because it wasn't fair that they had to compete with the PSP, he didn't mean it wasn't going to be fair because they PSP was going to kill them, but unfair because each DS sold wasn't really going to count.

That's good that Sony is optimistic. And i must agree...PS3 is a longer- lasting console.

And it's words like these that made mw switch my allegiance from Sony to ANYONE ELSE, both Nintendo and MS.

Sony is still a bunch of cocky SOB's, I really hope they get their head handed to them even more.
I really can't stand them now. And the PS2 was my choice of consoles last gen.
I hope they crash and burn.

Thats right please forget the system thats kicking our ass, because, um, we operate in a different world. STFU, Just because you can't beat them doesn't mean you ingore them.

So he's basing Microsoft's console longevity off of one console? Besides that, mind you, this generation is probably in the most competitive system war ever. For him to jump to conclusions just sounds foolish and ironically enough, insecure.

I think the PS3 will out last the current gen of consoles. PS2 is still going strong despite its age. The Wii is the Arizona Cardinals of the game consoles, no one expected them to be on top and yet here it is. (sorry about the football comparison)

Well I guess he's right that if you keep on selling your system for 5 years after the competition has released their next generation system, you will surpase them. But does that really count? And saying that they're really number one is like Sega saying that they beat Nintendo because the Super Nintendo doesn't really count. Both statements are extremely childdish. Beyond childish. Only a child would say that they are the best because their poorly selling system is the best because eventually years and years after the competition disconued their systems ours is going to surpass them and the one they can't surpass doesn't really count. So I guess the 8-Bit Nintendo beat the PS3 this generation, since the PS3 wont surpass it.

Sounds like Kaz is in extreme denial and does not handle losing well. Yes the Wii is your competition and yes the 360 will in the end outsell the PS3. Maybe if the PS3 would lower there price!
