Gamer eats saw blades to kill himself

Kotaku reports that a 23-year-old gamer named Fu ingested saw blades in an attempt to kill himself. The man, who's allegedly severely addicted to playing video games, was taken to a hospital in Bejing, China after his suicide attempt.

In the original news article from China Daily, it was reported that even after being admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment, Fu

"kept talking incoherently about how to win his favorite computer games."

It was not revealed what game or games Fu was specifically addicted to, whether it was World of Warcraft, Starcraft, or anything else. The article also noted that Fu had been addicted to video games ever since junior high school.

The man's parents said that their son's obsessive gaming habits had become worse recently.

THE VERDICT by Patrick Shaw Patrick Shaw's Avatar This story is pretty crazy and I hope this guy Fu gets the help he needs to get his life back together. Part of me wonders at what point does gaming become a full-blown addiction? Do I have an addiction? I know a lot of people who play a s-ton of video games every day... are they okay? Or maybe it's all bull and only a small few have gaming habits that could qualify as an unhealthy addiction.

Is that really the best way to do yourself in? This guy better get years of help by a team of psychologists and psychiatrists.

How hard is it to commit suicide? I seriously think they want to survive just to get the attention.

Anyways, somebody told me that the show Intervention did an episode over video games. Apparently this guy was ignoring his family and missing work in order to play. Its pretty sad. I love video games but its not hard for me to turn off the system and go play outside.

Frisbee golf FTW!

I guess the real question is: can video games be considered an addiction?

Damn, if I were going to kill myself I'd do something less painful. Still, I hope this guy gets some help.

Maybe not but it seems it's hard for you to turn off your computer since your on here all day everyday. Go play some frisbee golf for real that way I don't have to see a comment from you on every single page here.

To answer your question Patrick, I think gaming becomes an addiction when you start ignoring your responsibilties. For example missing work or not spending time with your kids and so on. Some people (myself included) play as an escape from a stress filled day, the problem begins when you forget it's a brief escape that's just there to entertain you and start to view it as your whole life. I think some people get so into them because it might be hard for them to make friends. My mom used to babysit a kid that in my view had a bad gaming addiction all he wanted to do was play and when I used to tell him he couldn't play my x-box to go outside and play real sports he would get so angry his face would turn red. In time I took him out introduced him to some friends and now he's always hanging with his friends and only plays games a little bit before he goes to sleep.

Technically, video games can't become an addicition as they can't cause a physical desire, but they can become an obsession.
