Rumor addressed: Sony not on the 'brink of upheaval'

In a new report, Sony, makers of the PS3, says that plans to close multiple divisions of the company never existed.
After The Times reported that Sony, creators of the PlayStation 3 video game console, had plans to "abolish" and radically change numerous divisions of the corporation, a new report on Reuters reveals that Sony is denying that any of this is even true.
Is Sony in trouble or not?
In the original article, Sony was said to be "on the brink of upheaval " and that the company would soon be making "sacred cow-slaying measures."
Sony representative Atsuo Omagari contested these reports, telling Reuters that "we don't have any such plan." Omagari also said that "we do not plan to announce additional restructuring measures at this time."

"I know the economy is in rough shape but I have a hard time believing things could be this bad for Sony. Let's hope their official rebuttal is legit."
So is the economy to blame for the PS3's dismal performance?

I think it's the people that work at all the electronic store and departments that's the problem. When I bought my PS3 a couple months ago at Best Buy the store clerk (my guess he was at least 17-18) tried everything in his power to convince me to buy a 360. I told him that I already have a 360 but he gave this look like if I was on crack and then he said "don't buy a PS3 then, you're not gonna use it". When he said that I gave him the "you're on crack look", did a 180 with the PS3 in hand and just walked away to the cash register. Whether people like the 360, PS3, or Wii; people like that should not be working in that kind of place.

It's the delays the broken promises the high ass price the step behind the competition that got Sony hurting. They need to tighen the hell up. pump out some dope games improve their relations with 3 rd party developers so multiplatform releases run better or up to par with the competition and hook up the customers.

Well, having a pricey $400 game console in this economy is surely not a great position to be in. As long as the economy doesn't go all recession for a long time, Sony should pull out of this just fine. These guys are BIG.

that guy's an idiot. you think he would want you to buy a ps3. more money for the store = more money for him.

It doesn't really matter whether or not this is true. Sony won't abandon the gaming market just yet, not after the success of the PS2. Sony's gaming division may be restructured, but not "slain." I would be more conscerned about Sony's other ventures, maybe something like their eBook reader that applies only to a niche market (not saying that department in particular, just that type of department). They might also move away from the high priced DSLR cameras and focus on the cheaper, more profitable cybershots.
All in all though, I don't see Sony being in such dire straights that they would abandon any of their major departments.

Actually no, more money for the store equals still close to minimum wage for him and not one penny more. And for Evo, I doubt there's a conspiracy with all the department store kids to try to convince people to buy a 360 over the PS3, and I'm willing to bet millions of dollars I don't have that the reason why the PS3 is in last place is not because of this conspiracy. That particular kid just sounded like a fanboy, or maybe someone who actually sincerely didn't want you to make a mistake. High price for a difficult system to program for sounds like a more reasonable reason why the PS3 is in last place.
