PS2 the most played console of 2008

Nielsen research has released which consoles received the most love in 2008 and the results are quite interesting.

PS2 the most played console of 2008

There are more than 140 million PS2 owners

It turns out, according to their research, that the PS2 was played the most nationwide with 31.7 percent of the total time spent playing games, from January 2008 - October 2008. Xbox 360 came in second with 17.2 percent of the time, with the Wii coming in at 13.4 percent.

That's not the interesting part though, what I found so jaw dropping was the the original Xbox scored higher than the PS3 with a total of 9.7 percent versus the PS3's 7.3 percent. The Gamecube even still hold it's own on the charts with a 4.6 percent of total time spent playing videogames. "Other" made up the rest with 16.2 percent.

Those are some rather interesting numbers. I can't believe the PS2 still beat out the Xbox 360. I haven't picked up a PS2 game in ages! I love the fact that the Gamecube still made the list...that system still has a special place in my heart.

Makes sense at 129.88 its alot more affordable than the others. Also with the average new release costing 29.88 if u have a budget or just a parent thats not gonna spend 64 bucks for video games most that you don't play twice it really fits. Course with sony new slogan we are looking toward the future not the past it shows they still don't get it.

Umm...how does one know how much the PS2 is being played? Or any of the systems for that matter? I think this article was created so that Sony could have some "positive" news. Meh!

The numbers come from the Nielsen National TV Panel of homes. This is the same panel that produces the TV ratings. The numbers represents actual gameplay in Nielsen households throughout the U.S. Any device that is hooked up to any TV in a Nielsen household is measured electronically by the "people meters", which also delineate which member(s) of the household is playing the console(s).

I hope this helps.

given the installed base of these consoles.....its not THAT surprising. i found it more surprising that the Wii isnt number 2 given the TONS of owners out there.....but neh, its behind 360....crazzzy.

even still, i play both my PS3 and 360 (just got COD WaW on 360) and im having a great time......2 months to go, and ill be playing Killzone 2......im pumped.

I simply don't have the money for a 360 or PS3... I play my Xbox all the time, though. A used system only cost me 60 bucks, and quality games are cheap: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was $4.99, Far Cry Instincts was $6.99, Max Payne 2 was $1.50... I got a system and about 8 great games for less than $100.

Considering that the Xbox still has more and better games than the PS3 it's not too surprising that it beat Sony's new system. The PS3 has about 3-5 games that distingush it from other systems. The original Xbox has hundreds of those and the 360 has dozens so far.
