Windows XP death delayed again

Microsoft has once again put Windows XP on life support, extending the OS's death date to May 30, 2009. The reprieve comes two months after rumors swirled about yet another prolonged death.

Windows XP death delayed again

How long can you go?

In the new agreement -- first discovered by ChannelWeb -- distributors can purchase XP licenses until January 31, 2009, the original date in which XP was supposed to turn to dust, but take delivery against those orders through May 30.

Windows XP was supposed to stop shipping on January 30, 2008, but that date has been extended several times. It will live on Netbooks until 2010. XP is also still a booming business: Dell started charging $150 per Vista downgrade -- three times as much as the original fee.

Meanwhile, Windows 7's rumored release date hovers around October 2009. With each extension of Windows XP's death, Microsoft inches closer to Windows 7's release, thereby sublimating Vista and its skimpy chances at some kind of late-blooming success. Given the market's resistance to Vista -- and Microsoft's own perceived uncertainty -- we should expect Windows 7 to arrive sooner rather than later so the monstrous software company can save face.

Man from the looks of it Windows Vista is pretty much pointless. Oh well...

Another misleading article. The reason why they are extending it is for those new really low powered low cost laptops. They're only extending the OEM version, so people can't go out to the store and buy it. Vista is great by the way. I couldn't care less about Microsoft, but it seems gamepro tries to twist even non Microsoft video game news in a negative way.

The only people who don't like Vista are people who don't know how to use it, or people who have underpowered machines. People didn't like XP at first either. Upgrade your machines and learn how to run it.

Also, I have 2.5GB of ram on my laptop right now as I type this Vista is using around 1.2gb of ram, (I have integrated graphics may I add) most of that ram being used to run my computer smoother. If I had XP installed, XP would have been using like no more than 400mb of ram, while having over 2gb of ram idle using electricity. My point is that what people think is bloat is actually Vista using available resources to run your computer smoother. 2gb of ram costs $20. We're not in 2001 anymore.

I checked the prices and what's funny is that a 2gb stick costs about $20 dollars, but a 4gb stick costs $200.
