Microsoft: Aware of a disc scratching problem before 360 shipped

A court document in an ongoing class-action lawsuit against Microsoft revealed that the company was well aware of the disc drive problem while it was in production.

In an ongoing lawsuit against Microsoft for compensation due to scratched/broken discs caused by the Xbox 360, a court document has revealed that members of the team were well aware that the drive could potentially cause problems to discs after the 360's release.

Microsoft: We were aware of a disc-scratching problem prior to the release of the Xbox 360

I broke.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has revealed a quote from Microsoft's program manager Hiroo Umeno found in the document, where he states "This is ... information that we as a team, optical disc drive team, knew about..."

Microsoft has asserted that disc damaging problems are not exclusive to the Xbox 360, and that warning labels are in place to prevent these errors.

THE VERDICT by Andy Burt Andy Burt's Avatar I have to admit that though it's true that any gaming system is capable of damaging game/movie discs, this news comes as no surprise considering the 360's track record of hardware problems.

They owe me a PGR3 game then

They owe alot of people for their "scratched disc" return policy. What were they charging for having MS replace a scratch disc, something like $20? I had one scratch disc in my 360's life time and it was caused by moving the 360 from it position. I see another lawsuit coming.

The MS philosophy:

Console scratches discs... that's OK, MS fanboy sheep will buy another copy. Oh, the consoles overheat and brick, that's OK, MS fanboy sheep will buy another machine.

i just don't see why people keep standing up for this company and defending them when they prove time and time again they can't be trusted. yeah, it's easier to make games because you're not working with a blu-ray drive, that's why there are more exclusives. yeah it was out a year before the wii and ps3, but it has proved to be an unreliable piece of equipment. extending the warranty isn't doing justice to all the 360 owners who have had problems since '05. replacing junk with junk doesn't help matters at all. i know the ps2 had some hardware issues at launch, but sony was quick to respond to these complaints and fix the problems. m$'s answer is.....ignore it and it'll go away? i don't think so...

Did you try calling the customer service I had a 360 break on me and burn a ring around my Gears of War game and I called them and they replaced both the game and system.
The only thing was I had to send the game to anthor place (not the MS company) and it took pretty long (like 3 weeks) the get back. But You and htown4life should at least call the company (1800-4myxbox) and see what they tell you guys. It doesn't hurt to try and who knows you might get a new copy like I did.

Thats....unfortunate.

Looks like they pulled a John McCain move. They just wanted to be the first on the market, ignoring all the RROD, overheating, and disc scratching problems.

Luckily for me my Elite still works fine....hope it stays that way...
