November 2008 NPD sales figures: Everyone wins

The video game industry is looking hale and hearty, according to newly released NPD Group sales figures. Despite a souring economy, North American game sales for November 2008 are 10% higher than November 2007 -- an impressive achievement.

Saying that "all three of the newer generation console systems have something to brag about," NPD analyst Anita Frazier reports robust November game sales for the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3. In fact, game sales were up 10% over November 2007, itself a hugely successful month.

Hardware sales were strong, too. The Wii and DS, of course, continued their domination of the sales charts. But the Xbox 360 showed strong sales, and even the PlayStation 3 hardware sales are up 60% year-to-date.

Translation? Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are all performing well. This fact led NPD analyst Frazier to proclaim that "it's clear there can be more multiple victors this generation." Frazier added that price was still a "strong factor" for console sales, but that "the most important factor [for 2009] will be the line-up of compelling games that will keep consumers involved in the industry."

Full figures below.

The 10 best-selling games for November 2008, according to the NPD Group's sales figures:

  • 4. PSP -- 421,000

Put aside your fanboy-ism for a moment here and you'll see that everyone is doing well. Sure, the Xbox 360 has bigger numbers than the PS3, but the PS3 has seen a massive improvement. Naturally, the Wii continues to crush. This is great news for all gamers, and proves that the video game industry won't grind to a halt during these rough economic times. That's something we can all agree is great news.

Wow, the Wii and 360 just dominated poor Sony. Consumers love price cuts which is why MS WILL continue to outsell sony until they get a price cut, but that's doubtful since sony said themselves that theres NO price cut coming. The 360(24.86 million sold) now has a 7 milion lead over the ps3(17.88 million sold), so next year sony is going to need a lot of luck in order for them to even try to catch up to MS much less the Wii.

In Japan Sony is doing bad as well with only 2.5 million sold and the Wii with 7.1 million sold in the SAME time period. Sony is dead in japan, Nintendo has already gained back there audience with the DS and now with the Wii in the console market.

Whats worse for poor old sony is that Resistance 2( sold horrible) Motorstorm 2 (sold horrible in the U.S.) and LBP did NOT move consoles which is a VERY bad sign for sony. If NONE of those games moved ps3 (not even GTA4) then I doubt a little game like killzone 2 will especially in February.

PlayStation 2 206K
PlayStation 3 378K
PSP 421K
Xbox 360 836K
Wii 2.04mil
Nintendo DS 1.57mil
you have to add all of Sony's platforms just to beat 360 in sales..
Nov. 2007 / Nov 2008 = Differential
Playstation 3: 466K / 378K = -88K
Playstation 2: 496K / 206K = -290K
PSP: 567K / 421K = -146K
So 88k less this year then last year.. What about all those killer games that came out? Not even gonna mention that LBP didnt even make the top 10? How L4D outsold Resistance2 in a lot less time?
I wonder why the NPD numbers werent given in full? Oh thats right because they would show the truth... But WE are the ones that need to put our Fanboy-ism aside....

Oh man, the PS3 is getting raped. These #'s can't be spun any other way. All of Sony's supposed heavy hitters have underperfomed to the point of irrelevance.

Let me translate: Dispite all predictions to the contrary, PS# still fines itself in last place and will be forced to drop the price or give up the the fight; 360 is crushing the the PS3 since the price drop and the release of gears but still far from catching the Wii. Wii dominates again to confirm that it is the console of the masses (Which I personally have no interest in owning). I do respect what nintendo has accomplished though.

People don't realize that the 200$ Xbox 360 is total joke and a scam. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

I think its one of the best deals going. Buy the Arcade with the new bundle that comes with 5 arcade games and two free games. Buy a 120g western Digital HDD off e-bay new for $40 and you have an elite Xbox360 for under $250. You're right...you get what you pay for....

I knew Sony was struggling, but I didn't think it was that bad relative to everything else. Sony needs to find some answers quick, and the snooze/sausage festival that is Home is not going to get it done.
