The struggling publisher of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is running out of options after a key investor leaves the company drowning in debt.
NOM
Midway Games is running out of time. The much-loved, much-respected publisher of classic arcade games such as Mortal Kombat, Defender, Smash TV, and Spy Hunter may default on $240 million in debt according to the Chicago Tribune.
An integral part of the video game industry in the 80s and 90s, the arcade-focused Midway Games has struggled mightily to transition to a gaming world ruled by home consoles such as the Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii. Midway's latest game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, is seeing strong early sales. Unfortunately, that may not be enough to save the cash-strapped publishing legend.
Making matters worse is that Sumner Redstone, Midway's largest shareholder, just sold off his 87% stake in the company for a mere $100,000 (plus $70 million in debt) with no advance warning to Midway. And today, Midway warned that it might default on $240 million in debt, if bondholders request full repayment as is expected.
What would a post-Midway world look like? Can Mortal Kombat find a new home? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Don't worry Midway, I'll be purchasing MK vs. DCU soon!!!
Its really a shame that the arcade scene isn't doing so well. Some of my favorite Midway games are Hydro Thunder, Mortal Kombat, Blitz, Galaga, NBA Jam and Unreal Tournament 3
I really hope Midway survives

Not really doing anything for Wii owners and I am glad they are in such a desperate situation. Focus on the wrong console and this is what you get.. I bet they wish they had paid more attention to the cheaper one to develop for then throwing it all away on crappy HD content. Sorry but when you refuse to support the number 1 console closure is what you get and deserve. Now I am not speaking of second party companies so you fanboys try to keep that in mind with your mindless repsonses

I do believe that Mortal Kombat could find a new home... if they make much needed improvements. Armageddon was a step in the right direction. MK vs. DC is a good game, but it suffers from it's lack of legitimate Fatalities, which are a staple in MK's history. I understand why DC wouldn't allow the use of extremely violent fatalities. It wouldn't bode well to see American heroes like Superman or Batman have their heart or spinal cord ripped out. This is why the next Mortal Kombat game should be just that, a Mortal Kombat only game. Get back to the basics. Star over on the story and revitalize it with a more serious tone.

That's because most of the good games on the Wii are made by Nintendo.. and third parties haven't been able to match Nintendo's quality in terms of software, so they flounder on the system. It's best for third parties to play it safe on the other systems than put some effort into making a decent Wii game, unfortunately that's only going to work for so much longer as the PS3 continues to lose money and 360 drifts further and further away sales wise.

Gee,
Now it seems like this recession(sic!) is finally hitting the game industry I hope Midway will pull its way through. Maybe they should ask congress for a bailout? hell why not everyone's doing it. lol
