Ziff Davis: Ailing EGM all but doomed

The long running video game magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly, or EGM to we in the know, is all but doomed, its publisher said today.

According to Jason Young, CEO of the magazine's ailing publisher, Ziff Davis, the magazine might not last to see its 20th anniversary next summer.

This would be the second Ziff Davis magazine to get the ax in as many weeks. Earlier this week, the publisher eliminated the print version of PC Magazine, which had been on newsstands for more than 20 years. An online-only strategy might also work for EGM, the exec said.

According to an article in the New York Times (by way of Gamasutra),Young blamed rising costs and decreased advertising as reasons for the closing of PC Magazine (and presumably EGM, should it occur).

...AND THE UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONSHIP IS....GAMEPRO!!! You guy's don't really have anyone else left standing from your era do you? To be honest, I never bothered much with EGM. It's a cool read but it doesn't have that "it" factor that GamePro has and will always have. Brownies, anyone?

EGM never had good info in it. Their special stories never impressed me, and I wasn't a fan of the writing or layout. Oh well.

EGM > gamepro.... at least IMO... i have had a substriction to egm for over 6 years...no shit... and i have only a few gamepro mags... gamepro mags seem so kiddie to me... i like there website more tho.... 8P... egm will be missed!!!

I was never a fan or EGM either didn't like their editors they seemed like a bunch of wanna be smart a$$es and really dorky guys. I only read three GI, OXM (really get it for the demos) and my favorite by far is Gamepro. Gamepro always has the best coverage for the games I like and I like how the GamePros themselves leave comments and get on the site and talk to the fans I can't think of any other game mag that does that and that's why they're always #1 in my book. It's the little things like that.

it's sad that the competition shrinks but ironic that the EGM mag at the top states that it's the number 1 mag....just sayin' Gamepro, I do want your mag to look better if you want constructive critsism. It was this one mag that I quite cant remember...um....well the point is their pages were big and glossy with hi res shots. The problem with that mag was it reviewed games like two months too late. But the presentation was spot on. I would like to see thicker pages,better, bigger (like the whole page), hi res screen shots, and more heard around Gamepro.com, they are really funny. I know yall dont listen to me in particular, but hey, I have a voice too.

EGM is like the only game magazine where the writers have journalism degrees.... They were awesome. I'll miss them.
