Nintendo Wii: Soon with more core

Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway, speaking with MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo, has promised 2009 will see Wii games that will make the most intense of gamers "stand up and pay attention."

The comments came as Totilo quizzed Dunaway about how Nintendo could appeal to customers, beyond Nintendo loyalists and the huge number of non-gamers it had brought into the gaming fold thanks to Wii Sports, Brain Training and the like.

"If you look at something like The Conduit, that's really pushing the edge of graphic capabilities on the Wii and doing things that people didn't think were possible. And I think, one, that makes other developers stand up and take notice. And two, that makes consumers say, 'Huh. Maybe there's something to this.' Or if you look at Mad World [you can see] just the sheer creativity of that graphic style and the impact of the black and the white and the red," she said.

Dunaway went on to say that 2009 will be the year the Wii "turns the tide" and proves the system can appeal to people of all tastes. Other evidence she provided beyond a pair of fairly violent Sega offerings in 2009 were the Nintendo-published refreshes of Sin & Punishment and Punch-Out; both of which are slated for release next year.

"[B]ringing that [intellectual property] to the U.S. for the first time - would start to get at that action-seeking, thrill-seeking need that that audience has. Punch-Out, while it may be more of a Nintendo fanboy [kind of game], still, I think, gets at that need for action," she said.

So, GamePro readers, are you not entertained? Does this properly scratch the itch you have for action games?

Even though I'm more of an x-box 360 guy I still love Nintendo and hope they make a stronger comeback next console generation. I can't help but cheer for the company who made me a gamer.

Let Nintendo stick to what works for them. Nintendo's franchise games and catering to the younger audience. This bold move that nintendo is planing won't work in their favore. Dispite is handful of wiiboys, capt.funboy and the bunch, wii is aimed at nintendo fateful and not hardcore gamers. just cause they brind out a few hardcore games doesn't mean its going to change is stradegy of tons of shit games with a sprinkle of nintendo favorites. I can't wait for Left4Dead, its going to kick ass on the Wii.

It is FAITHFUL.. Nintendo faithful.. Not Nintendo fateful you complete dumb ass.. BTW they werent talking about you. They said GAMERS.. Not GAYMERS. BTW why is a bold move? NOthing out of the norm for them.. I guess I am asking too much of a known troll and fanboy to use common sense.. Granted it is hard to use what you do not have. I bet Madworld for PS3 will kick ass.. No not getting that one.. Monster hunter 3 on PS3? NOpe not getting that one either.. How are you enjoying world class paintball? I am sure you consider it AAA must own for PS3 while everyone else just sees it as crap shovelware.. You are all the proof we need that Nintendo is doing the right thing. IF not for you,ARtsaber, Toneman werent acting so depserate it wouldnt be so obvious how great they are doing.. PLease feel free to continue to cry while your chosen console is in dead last getting pwned by a console that breaks and one that is a gimmick.. What does that really say about how poor of a product PS3 is.. People would rather get RROD then touch that console..

So they're not casual..but they are casual..?..and they want to give gamers what they want but they don't want to give them what...they want..?..It's as if they can get away with saying anything, even if it is contradictory.

Nintendo needs to do something. I only bought 2 Wii games this year, 2. Brawl and Mario Kart. And those came out in March and April. This wasn't the best year for Wii games I'm hoping Nintendo wakes up and smells the coffee in 2009. I guess I could always buy Wii music..haha

A little late with the games perhaps?

How so? The console is only two years old.

Once again, the phony terms "hardcore gamer" and "hardcore game" comes up. A game is a game. If you play Mad World a couple times a week, it becomes a "casual game". If you play Cooking Mama every day for hours, it becomes a "hardcore game". Stop using meaningless terms. You'd be more accurate to say something along the lines of "games aimed at people with no life who have nothing better to do and spend all their spare time playing games". That is essentially what a so-called "hardcore gamer" is.

And just for your knowledge, the Wii isn't aimed at younger audiences. It's aimed at everyone. Young, old, single, family, etc. Just because the system doesn't have 400 First person shooters doesn't mean it's aimed at younger players. Little Big Planet is a cutesy "casual" game; is Sony now catering to a younger audience because it realizes you so-called "hardcore gamers" (see my phrase above) are not important enough to guarantee it's success? You've haven't done anything to prove otherwise so far.

Go for it Nintendo! But I don't think this is gonna happen, Nintendo's idea of Hardcore is way off.
