Wii gathering dust? Not so, says Nielsen survey

A new survey from the renown consumer tracking firm Nielsen found Wii usage is actually relatively healthy compared to other consoles.
All three, dust free.
Anyone who's visited an Internet forum, read a blog, or visited a news site like GamePro has seen it at least once. "My Wii," someone will say, "is gathering dust."
It's an Internet meme that's had considerable legs, starting pretty much when the Wii launched in 2006, and lasting to the present. The funny thing is that for a majority of Wii owners today, it isn't true.
In fact, new research out of the Nielsen Group today revealed that the Wii is actually a system that's played pretty consistently every month out of the year.
According to the chart, from September 2007 through August 2008, the average Wii was played, on average, five and six days per month for roughly 50 minutes at a time. The numbers remained consistent throughout the year.
But let's not forget about the other consoles. In an interview with GameDaily, Nielsen Games marketing manager Brad Raczka said, "all next generation consoles (Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii) continue to grow in terms of their overall consumption of usage minutes compared to the last generation."
In fact, Nielsen found that month over month the trend is continuing into 2008 and 2009. After seeing and playing the large number of solid new releases over the past two months we're inclined to agree.

So the Wii gets played once, maybe twice, a week and for almost an hour? My Playstation gets played five days a week for about four or five hour each day, and it's not even at MY house.
You know who only play video games once a week and only for a few minutes? Casuals.

the average Wii was played, on average, five and six days per month for roughly 50 minutes at a timeI am not going to say anything about the Wii, the article speaks for itself. I get alot of play time off my PS3 and 360. If I don't play it, my sons play online almost everyday as compared to someone playing the wii a few days a month. I know VoR and Capt. Sony hearts get broken everytime they here something negative about the Wii , even if the news tries to spin it in a positive light, but it is what it is.

Me and my friends play his Wii for like 2-3 hours 4 times a week. And if I own'd a Wii sure it might only be played an hour or so every once in awhile but that doesn't make me a casual gamer I play 50hrs of games minimum during a week usually

Bullshit, the Wii is the most unplayed most sought after console in the history of gaming... no spin can fix that. My Wii may get turned on once every 2 months, so it should last for 30 years!

The problem is that you have TWO High definition choices with the other consoles, the Wii's 8 year old graphics card is too weak and cannot even output 720p. Huge problem when compared to the others... hook your Wii up to a big screen TV and it barely surpasses Collecovision

Nielsen claims that Wii's don't collect dust, while he's at it, why not go ahead and claim that 9 out of 10 Wii games are awesome and state that High definition is only a state of mind. Nielsen, go screw yourself with you highly biased survey that you paid a marketing research team to skew in your favor. i know all about them, we OWN Wiis you asshole, how can you tell US that our systems aren't collecting dust? Take the cock magnet off your lips dude.

Obviously time spent playing games on the Wii (or any other console) depends on the tastes of the owner, especially when said person has one or two other consoles and a pc/ mac to play games on.

If you ask me those numbers are pretty weak compared to the time I spend on my 360. Especially for a system marketed towards adolescence.

Who cares...obviously everyone who is writing in this forum plays WAY above any averages that are put out.
Wii is just okay, but I still play it alot. I think gamers should have both a Wii and either a PS3 or XBOX 360 to get the full gaming experience.
