Activision Blizzard exec mulls Guitar Hero subscription service

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, said Wednesday that the publisher may begin charging for user-generated songs uploaded to the Guitar Hero World Tour Tunes service.

Activision Blizzard exec mulls Guitar Hero subscription service

All your money (and your songs) are belong to us.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick knows a cash cow when he sees one, and has let it be known that the user generated content being created within Guitar Hero: World Tour could be sold as part of a subscription service in the future.

The revelation came during Wednesday's quarterly Activision Blizzard conference call with reporters. As noted by Kotaku, Kotick has previously stated the Guitar Hero music service, GH Tunes, has the potential to be one of the "credible alternatives to iTunes."

Perhaps boosting Kotick's rationale for monetizing the currently free service was the fact that Guitar Hero players have created approximately 25,000 songs since World Tour launched in September. Kotick made no mention of sharing the wealth with users whose songs became part of this hypothetical subscription service.

"The ability to offer these songs on a subscription basis may very well result in the newest subscription opportunity in our portfolio," Kotick said.

Just don't expect a cut of the profits if your Super Mario Bros. Guitar Hero theme makes it to the big leagues.

Yes, because we all want dumbed-down versions of popular tracks with no vocals. I'm excited to (eventually) see what people cook up, but if he thinks this will rival iTunes, he's deluding himself.

It will be better than iTunes, in a business perspective... people can download songs for free if they don't wanna pay for them on iTunes (illegally, but still)... But for Guitar Hero, there's no way around it... you have to pay to get the songs. But does this mean that anyone can just make crappy songs and upload them... and then they'll charge other users to download those songs? I hope there's at least a preview button that plays a sample or something. I'm curious as to how many people on this site have ever paid for an MP3 download (any service) compared to how many people paid for song packs for RB or GH.

If they do do this, they should let us actually preview the song what it looks like, rather than just hearing it. Some of the songs sound really good, but then when you actually watch how it is played, you don't like it that much. I found an intro for Thunderstruck, and it sounds a lot like it, but on medium, all it is is green notes....not fun at all.

Just another reason I prefer Rock Band to Guitar Hero. No, Guitar Hero doesn't "suck." It's a fun game. I just prefer Rock Band.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are fun games, no doubt, but are they really worth all that money? IMO, NO! It just seems like you have to pay 3-4 times the money you'd pay for say Fallout 3... what with all the periperals and add-ons and track packs etc... I got GH3 for Wii, and it's fine, but it's not worth 100$... so I'm done with buying those games. If I go to a friends house and they have it, sure I'll play it, but I ain't buying any more.

Then add vocals. The point is create your own music not recreate someone else's.

I heard that GHWT's music creator doesn't allow for vocal work to be added into it. Thus, my comment about instrumental-only tunes.
