UPDATE - Rock Band creators confirm The Beatles music project

UPDATE: Earlier rumors were proven *somewhat* correct today following a report that confirmed that Rock Band creators were bringing a Beatles music project to stores in late 2009.

Report: The Beatles confirmed for Rock Band 2

We *heart* Rock Band! Now Pay us...

UPDATE: Following a conference call with Harmonix, MTV and Apple Corps. Ltd., we now know a Beatles music project, inspired by Rock Band, will arrive in the 2009 holiday season. While not a Rock Band-branded game, this title was inspired by that rhythm game, but will not be a Rock Band expansion pack, execs said.

"This is not just a Rock Band expansion pack, it is much much more than that," said Harmonix's Alex Rigopulos.

Early indications are that the game will take advantage of the Rock Band instruments, but execs were cautious to distance this game from other band branded efforts, like Activision's recent Guitar Hero: Aerosmith expansion. Just how "different" this game will be from that effort remains to be seen.

Original reporting follows:

Sources confirmed to the Wall Street Journal today that The Beatles music catalog is coming to Rock Band later this year.

The deal is seen as a major blow against MTV Network rival Activision, whose Guitar Hero: World Tour full band rhythm game launched this past Sunday.

The news is hardly a surprise, given the not-so-secretive special event invites members of the gaming press received on Wednesday. Hosted by MTV Networks, Harmonix and Apple Corps Ltd., the event was all but confirmed to be a Rock Band/Beatles announcement of some kind or another (that's not Steve Jobs' Apple Inc, by the way).

Perhaps even more interesting than the band's choice of gaming platform is the fact that the Beatles chose video games over a music platform. Apple Inc.'s industry-leading iTunes platform, in case you didn't know, has yet to receive the Beatles blessing, and remains devoid of the band's popular hits.

This is going to be awesome. My "most wanted song" is more obscure, but I'd love to be able to rock to "Happiness is a Warm Gun"

And that song is not obscure at all Fat_bot.

It's more obscure than other Beatles tunes. I'm not saying it's not well-known, it's just not one of their mainstream songs ("Hey Jude", "Get Back", "Let it Be", "A Day in the Life")

I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in! I can't wait to play any and every Beatles song that they will release!

I read the news today oh, boy
About Rock Band 2 making the grade
And though the news was rather sad for Guitar Hero
Well, i just had to laugh
I saw the web-link
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the platform had changed
A crowd of people stood and played
They'd heard their songs before
Nobody was really sure if it was cross platform at all
