Blizzard Entertainment today announced that total World of Warcraft subscribers has surpassed 11 million, equal to the population of the entire state of Ohio, according to 2007 census estimates.
The news comes as anticipation builds for the release of the game's second expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, which launches on November 13.
"Since debuting in North America in 2004, World of Warcraft has become the most popular MMORPG in the world," Blizzard announced in a statement today. "In addition to being the bestselling PC game of 2007, The Burning Crusade expansion holds the record for fastest-selling PC game of all time, with nearly 2.4 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability."
World of Warcraft is unique (compared to most games) in that gamers must pay a monthly subscription fee of $13-15 per month to play, in addition to buying the game for $30. The MMO has also drawn criticism from disgruntled spouses and researchers for being abnormally addictive.
GamePro awarded four and a half stars to World of Warcraft in 2004, and five stars to The Burning Crusade last year.

one day a babysitter came to watch a couples kids. when she came, the news was on and it said the clown statue was missing. the babysitter called the couple and told them. the couple said to take the kids to a safe place. the clown statue is actually a crazed killer who escaped from prison. if you dont put this comment to 3 posts, the clown statue will come at 1 a.m. with a chainsaw at your house

I don't think WoW is overhyped. I've been playing it off and on since it launched, and they just keep adding new things to keep it fresh. Blizzard has managed to create a game which can cater to hardcore players and casual players alike. I don't play it 6 hours everyday, and I still feel like I get somewhere in the few hours I play every week.
Oh yea....FOR THE HORDE!!!

This game is seriously overly hyped
You've most likely never played it then. This 1 single game has demolished sales of every game out there right now, as well as keeps 11 million people paying them monthly to play it, I doubt it's over hyped. Most people I know that start to play it slowly lose touch with reality because of addiction. It's a substitute for crack.
