Report: Legendary Pictures to buy Epic Games

Citing "multiple sources close to companies," Variety on Thursday said the creator of Batman: The Dark Knight is "in talks" to buy the studio behind Gears of War 2.

Although reporter Ben Fritz admitted that the deal could fall through, he maintains that "talks are under way" between the companies. Legendary became acquainted with Epic after co-financing the upcoming Gears of War movie with New Line Cinema, Fritz reports.

Both Legendary and Epic declined to comment on the deal, says Variety.

If you're wondering why a movie studio would be a video game developer, Variety explains that Legendary executive Thomas Tull resigned from the Brash Entertainment board just two weeks ago, but still sees games as a lucrative commodity. And Epic is an attractive studio, as its Unreal Engine is the most widely licensed graphics middleware in the industry, producing stable profits.

Unlike Gears of War 2, we don't know how this will end.

Gears of War 2 arrives on Xbox 360 on Nov. 7. Legendary plans to release a Hollywood interpretation of World of Warcraft in 2009.

first=having too much time to sit and refresh a site to type the word first or a variation of. i dream of the day when people just comment on the topic and/or on previous comments. and for the actual topic. I'm surprised we don't see more mergers of this kind. Entertainment with entertainment makes sense especially with licenses that can be trasferred from one medium to another.

i NEVER have faith in videogame to movie adaptations. i'd say 95% of them are garbage and the other 5% barely get a pass as "good movies". don't get me wrong.....the material in Gears of War could make for an interesting movie.....but i don't really see them forking over a large budget to support the film and in return it will probably LOOK like shit because true enough.....for a Gears of War movie its gonna require CGI and hella make-up effects and if they skimp on that.....then this will just be Doom 2 with the name Gears of War slapped on it. sorry, the last videogame movie i had faith in was Max Payne....because the material could have made for a fun cop drama.....and instead it was GOD AWFUL and quite possibly one of the WORST movie i've seen in theaters in the last 2 or 3 years....easy, like Uwe Boll bad.
