Next Bungie game might go multiplatform

Halo developer Bungie is hard at work today on Halo 3: Recon, as well as a completely new title that isn't tied to a specific platform (like the Xbox 360, for example).

Next Bungie game might go multiplatform

Come get some new IP! (Click for more Halo 3: Recon info!)

Bungie revealed today that it is hard at work on a new title that will not be tied to the Xbox 360.

The news does not apply to the recently revealed Halo 3: Recon prequel, which is coming to the Xbox 360 sometime in 2009.

"No, we're not [tied into a specific platform for new IP]," said community and PR director Brian Jarrard, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz. "We haven't gotten that far yet to be totally honest.

"In theory we do have every means to go out and find the right ecosystem, the right partners, to align with. So who knows what the future will bring us."

Nevertheless, Jarrard was careful to stress the high value Bungie assigned the Xbox 360/Microsoft community, even as he wouldn't rule out future development on the PS3 or Wii. Online, especially, is an area where Bungie will continue to rely on Microsoft's platform, Jerrard's comments seemed to suggest.

"For us the 360 has been great because there's just been this great synergy with Bungie because all of our games have this inherent social community aspect," Jarrard said. "Everything we've ever done has this very big online component - we, together with the Xbox consoles, have continued to push that Live experience, the whole notion of a party experience forward.

Wait, does that mean Halo: Party Games is coming soon?

Readers, this interview begs the question: Could Halo 3: Recon be the swan song for the solid relationship between Bungie and Microsoft? Today, it seems more likely than ever that the answer might be "yes."

They are a 3rd party company, so why not? I mean, they aren't pigeon holed into staying with one console like Insomniac seems to be.

ticl

why do you guys think they left ms? only the 360 morons think that nothing would leave them. ms doesnt have no 1st party games[who cares about viva la puke]. 360=deadinthewater

Bungie has become a third party developer and multiplatform games are becoming the norm for such developers. It doesn't surprise me in the least that Bungie is considering developing on other platforms. Like it or not the future is multiplatform for third party developers, unless of course the console manufacturers pony up some exclusivity cash.

nintendoes

Nintendo wouldn't buy them (they are obviously looking for money) but Sony might. . .
