The NPD has released the official U.S video game sales for the month of September with few surprises.

The force is strong with Nintendo, Star Wars in September video game sales

September VG sales do not betray me (click for more screens)

As alluded to by LucasArts last month, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed finished as the best-selling game (the Xbox 360 version) in September. Wii Fit, Rock Band 2 (360), Mario Kart (Wii), and The Force Unleashed (PS3) rounded out the top five, while Mercenaries 2 (360), Wii Play, Madden 09 (360), The Force Unleashed (Wii), and Madden 09 (PS2) brought up the rear.

On the subject of hardware, Nintendo continued its two year dominance selling more than 1.2 million fun machines in the single month of September. Wii sold 687k units, followed by Nintendo DS with 536k units, Xbox 360 with 347k units (thanks in part to a price drop), PSP with 238k units, PS3 at 232k, and PS2 with a respectable 174k units sold.

Overall video game sales were down 7 percent on the month for the first time since 2006, the NPD announced. While the banking crises quickly comes to mind as a reason for the slight downturn, the NPD blamed the drop on an abnormally strong September 2007, when Halo 3 was released.

There seems to be no end to the insane number of Wi and DS' that get sold every month.

I'd get a Wii if it had more to offer. I still think Nintendo make the Wii's best games, and that's just not enough IMO.

Leave it to GamePro to make sure they don't have anything remotely positive about MS in a headline.

This was supposed to be "the year of the PS3" and yet it only built up a 250K YTD advantage over 360 as of August and now in one month half of that has been eaten away (and we're not even into the heavy Holiday Season). It looks like the 360 will repeat last years trend and pull ahead significantly in Nov-Dec thus locking in this generations rankings (Wii/360/PS3).

The continued weakness of PS3 software sales has to be discouraging for Sony and third-parties and I would not be surprised to see some smaller third-parties go back to just making games for the 360 with its slightly shorter, and less expensive, development cycle. Of course, the big devs will continue to publish on everything they can for the big budget releases.

I thought that the 360 might double the PS3 numbers for September due to the price cuts. The PS3 better hope that Little Big Planet is HUGE, because that looks to be there last hope of beating the 360.

The PS3 allowed Sony to win the next-gen DVD format battle but they are losing in the living room infotainment war. Sony needs to get with the multi-platform devs and really try to do what they can to make the PS3 unique. If they don't most people buy the 360 version, like myself, because of Live. The PS online network is really hit or miss. I also think that with the new Live browser with Netflix On Demand is going to convert even more people.

this dont surprise me cuz its been this way since the wii's birth. it will only get worse. sony comes out with a new ps3 model with a diff harddrive and thats their way of tryin to solve their problem. 360 cant solve its problem so it offers it device for less but that includes less like no harddrive so its not under 199. neither one is free online gaming. and the wii slowly starts adding or should i say revealing the different features of the wii. i remember wen the wii first came out someone disected the wii mote and saw a voice chip in it but didnt kno why it was there. and two years later we see y. and by 2011 imagine a super wii with high def graphics with more innovation. dont see microsoft doing much and sony wont even abandon their ps3 any time soon. maybe a color change but microsoft did that and drop the price but still nothin. do the math. ima get my hands on a 360 from a friend in trade for my wii. just a trade thing but she gets to play online for free wit my wii while i gotta go buy a xbox live card to play madden online its costin me money already and i dont own it.

The Nintendo WII continues its brisk sales. Wow.

Despite the economic worries it looks like the holidays will be a great time for gamers.
