Tabula Rasa fuels creator's space trip

Richard Garriott takes to orbit in a $30 million space trip launched Sunday morning from the Kazakhstan.

Richard Garriott, one of the founding fathers of massively multiplayer online gaming, blasted off into space early Sunday morning. The trip took off in a Soyuz TMA-13 from the nation of Kazakhstan with Garriott and a two-man crew aboard.

For ten days, Garriott will participate in experiments scheduled on the international space station. The $30 million trip has long been a wish of the famed online game designer who had used part of his own wealth to fund the expedition--some of which undoubtedly came as a result of his most recent title, Tabula Rasa. Sponsorships also contributed to paying for the endeavor.

Considering that Tabula Rasa has failed to hit subscriber forecasts since its launch in late 2007, perhaps it's more prudent to assume funding for Garriott's trip came from his other online game: Ultima. That game is frequently credited as establishing the genre we now know as World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online gaming.

Kazakhstan? Even though it must be sweet to just blow of $30 million, I would kind of be leary about launching in anything from Kazakhstan. It would seem like
Garriott paid for the whole trip, they had the ship and he had the gas money.

This is good news and fun news to read. I envy him, I would love to go into space even if it was on a Russian ship.

Nooo, games aren't over priced at all. I mean everyone has 30 million to spare for a FN SPACE TRIP!

A space trip on our dime, boy I'm really proud to be a gamer.

Isn't that the same as complaining when a sales person from Best Buy gets a new car? He gets paid same as anyone else, not his fault he was successful.
