Microsoft denies Xbox 360 Blu-ray report

Company says it has "no plans" to launch an external Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360, contrary to a new unproven report published Wednesday.
Microsoft says Xbox Blu-ray ain't happening
"As we've said before, Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on," a Microsoft representative told GamePro on Thursday, killing persistent rumors suggesting otherwise. "Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."
Yesterday, a story by the unknown X-bit Labs reported that Toshiba and Samsung had been "contracted to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Microsoft Xbox 360 game console," although a release date was reported as "under consideration."
This isn't the first time Microsoft has denied rumors of supporting Sony's high-definition disc format. In March, Xbox vice president Aaron Greenberg said, "Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience."
Toshiba terminated support of HD DVD in February, consequently making the external Xbox 360 HD DVD drive obsolete.

It would not look good if its own hd drive is obsolete and it adds different hd drive now.
Also adding more cost to the system does not make sense when it has cut prices so much already.

i think they should add blu-ray not only will they be able to put more into a game with blu ray disc but the movies are amazing on blu ray, and this would really give them the all around best media/game entertainment system. at least for now.

I thought it'd be difficult for Microsoft to do that because Sony owns blu ray.

Sony doesn't own Blu-ray. They are a major member of the Blu-ray Association, but they don't own it. There are a large number of companies that are part of the Blu-ray Association; Sony just happens to be the one in the forefront.

Blueray is in for now and the next 5 plus years most companies and consumers not going to tolerate changes every 12-36 months. as much as M$, Apple, Netflex, Amazon, Samsung and any other company can say Download-able Content is the way to go all they wont. an thats cool and all but its all ways going to be people who want software in there hands. even though downloading may be cheaper but if companies like Apple, Samsung, Toshiba, Dell, etc.. Can put out a multimedia center and a HDD with a lot of storage thats not going to cost less then $400. then if it do cost more then that people shouldn't B**ch about the price of the PS3 even now Apple whole computer line up cost more then PS3 and the iphone and the new ipod cost nearly as much. N.A TV about to go digital next year it wont be long till HDTV'S be the stander TV in every household at the same time bring down the price of HDTV'S and BlueRay players. as of now most HDTV'S over 42'inches dont support PC hook up so if your PC screen not big enough to enjoy a movie from the sofa or bed or laptop good luck with that.

They may not have immediate plans to release a Blu-Ray player for the 360... but I'm sure MS would like to keep their options open... so it's entirely possible that they've come to an agreement with Blu-Ray... just in case.

Which means if Microsoft wanted to get a Blu-ray drive they would still have to deal with Sony. Sony owns the Blu-Ray logo, which means they own the license. The minute Microsoft releases an unlicensed Blu Ray product for 360, Sony can and will sue. And guess what; according to the contract, they would win the case
