The publisher of Japan's Famitsu game mag sees Final Fantasy XIII, Dragon Quest IX, Monster Hunter 3 and White Knight Chronicles as the stars of Tokyo Game Show.
Final Fantasy XIII arguably the biggest game at TGS 08
The Tokyo Game Show is a big event in the calendar for anyone in the gaming industry and for Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Enterbrain, the company that publishes Japan's leading game magazine 'Famitsu', it represents a chance to gauge development at each company and gather clues to future market developments.
Speaking at a Tokyo news conference on Tuesday, Hamamura disclosed what he would be looking for when he arrives at Makuhari Messe, site of the Tokyo Game Show, on Thursday.
"If I think about hardware the news is already out so looking at software, on the Square Enix booth I'm interested in seeing how much of Final Fantasy XIII is finished and presented," he said. The level to which the game is presented will give a clue as to when it might be ready and that will have a direct impact on sales of the PlayStation 3 console.
"I'll also be looking to see if Dragon Quest IX is playable," said Hamamura. The latest installment in the long-running and hugely popular Dragon Quest series from Square Enix is due out on the Nintendo DS in March 2009.
"In regards to the Wii I'm interested to see how far 'Monster Hunter 3' has gotten along because that's one of the keys Nintendo must unlock before the Wii will appeal to core gamers," he said of the upcoming Capcom title. "On the Sony booth I'll be looking at 'White Knight Chronicles' and I think that will gather a lot of attention."
The Tokyo Game Show begins on Thursday and runs until Sunday at Makuhari Messe outside of Tokyo. Public admission days are Saturday and Sunday.

Forget about anything from Square as being big.. Sadly most PS3 owners now hate them and think they are complete crap simply because they are making games for more than just Sony. I just do not get it all. Square went from being THE reason to own a PS3 to being the worst dev ever..Simply because they do not have the same blind loyalty many PS3 fans have. I am now surious how many of those pissed off Sony fans will now pass o nthe game giving Square even more reason to focus on consoles other than PS3. PS3 fans are really starting to hurt themselves with their attitude. keep shouting this all or nothing BS and you'll be left with nothing.

Rpg's like final fantasy and dragon quest are big over there. I wish square enix made dragon quest 9 for the consoles. It is great that final fantasy 13 is coming out on the ps3 and xbox360.

The biggest games? LOL. yeah, that's assuming you actually like all that turn based crap, which I personally can't stand no matter what the platform.
And Square doesn't seem to realize that outside of Japan, the turn based RPG crowd is dwindling, being replace with full action RPG's like Fallout 3 Oblivion, Fable 2, as well as the handfull of MMO's coming soon.
They should just say the "Biggest Games that Japan will buy" because these games won't do numbers over here in the States, better in Europe but still not great.
I'm really curious to see the final numbers for FFXIII and the platform it sells on in the States. I think it's gonna surprise and disappoint a lot of people.

I wonder if FFXIII will help 360 sales in Japan.
Nope. Square isn't making FFXIII for the Japanese on the 360. They only get the PS3 version while Europe and America gets both the 360 and PS3 versions.

Just so you know Square-Enix was never loyal to Sony. The only reason they changed to Sonys PS1 was because it used Disc's unlike the N64 and that is what Square needed at the time. Square-Enix is all about making money they release games on many different consoles and they want to make as much money as they can so they can continue to produce the best possible games they can and supply them to everyone who would like to play them but cant because or some stupid console wars. That has always been their objective and will probably remain. I have been a fan of Square since the start of the company, even going back to there barly on par games before the FF series even started. I think they made a very good stratigic move releasing them for all consoles, you all know you will still buy the game when it comes out so just hush up and deal with the fact they want to expand and get as many people playing their games as possible.

Now their focus is active time battles without any random encounters like FF11 and up. you seem to like western rpgs vs. jrpgs and thats fine. but there are still alot of jrpg fans left in the U.S. and i think MMO's should be in their own category...They should just say the "Biggest Games that Japan will buy" because these games won't do numbers over here in the States, better in Europe but still not great.
