Reggie: Mario and Zelda Nintendo titles in 'deep development' (and be patient, please)

At a recent media summit in San Francisco, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime reconfirmed that Mario and Zelda first party IP is in development. Right. Now.

I could kill you with a single finger

Hearing reporters at major Nintendo events asking Reggie Fils-Aime about new Mario and Zelda titles has become something of an unofficial annual event, and the recent U.S. autumn media summit hosted by Big N in San Francisco didn't disappoint in that regard.

This time around it was G4 video game review show X-Play that got the mic into Reggie's maw first, and they were able to coax him into saying a little more about Nintendo's moneymaking first party franchises.

"You know, it's a great question... [but] I have to just step back and remind people... Smash Brothers is less than a year old. Kart is less than a year old. We're only getting to a year anniversary for Galaxy. We've just launched all of these great franchises.

"Do we have those specific teams working, the Mario team, the Zelda team? Absolutely," he said. "You've got to give us a little bit of time to create these games. They will be coming. I'm not going to spoil the surprise of when. But those games are all coming."

He makes an obvious point, but it's also worth noting that Fils-Aime is entirely correct about the past year and a half being rich with Nintendo first party IP. But oh, to be a fly on the wall in Nintendo's Japanese developer studios right now, right?

DUH!!! As if Nintendo would drop their 2 biggest franchises... As much as I LOVED Twilight Princess, it did almost feel like a remake of Ocarina of Time. I know people are anxious to get the next Zelda game... but I'd rather wait and get something new and different with the series.

They did a good job with galaxy. Zelda is always good but it looked like could have been better visually. Hope they make the next really good and add better sound.

How many 1st party games have Microsoft and Sony made in the last year and a half?

I loved Mario Galaxy so much that I'd be perfectly happy with Galaxy 2... with 120 new stars scattered accross new galaxies.

its the right time to announce a new zelda game. Twilight Princess has been out for almost 2 years. If you notice they time between Ocarina, majoras, windwaker, and twilight nintendo annouces zelda games after 2 years the previous one had been out

Geez, people have become impatient. Not even a year since Galaxy was released and people are demanding another game. None of those people would have survived the the NES/Super NES days when there were many years between Mario and Zelda games. The games are coming, so they need to be patient. Rushing out a game will only mean that it couldn't be perfected. Mario games are never rushed. They started working on Galaxy years before it was released. These people need to read a book or something to pass the time.

I'd rather have a top notch Mario game every 2-3 years than a crap game every year or more, and I am referring to Sonic The Hedgehog over the last few years.

Twilight Princess was good, but Ocarina of time still owns it. If Nintendo said that they will release Ocarina of Time with TP graphics (or may a little better) I would inmediately run out and buy a Wii just to replay that game with better textures and stuff. I don't care too much about Mario, I would take Zelda first anyday. Still, you can download Ocarina's ROM with better textures for your PC, but it's not the same feeling.

i'm looking forward to owning a DSi. Simply because it does so much more than a DS lite. I was going to buy one next weekend, too bad I don't. Nonetheless, I'm playing games on my 360, so I'll be good until way after April especially with Gears 2.

Sony has made: Warhawk, Uncharted, PixelJunk (if I'm right), Resistance, F1 Championship Edition, GT: Prologue, The NBA Series...I don't remember any more games right now.

Microsoft: Forza Motorsport 2, Gears of War, Halo 3, Perfect Dark: Zero...I'm not an Xbox 360 owner so I really can't say too much about 360 games, but I think those are the most important games. Correct me if I'm wrong people, thanks for the feedback :).
