At its Japanese fall press event Wednesday evening, Nintendo revealed what many gamers have demanded for months: a Wii storage solution.

Wii would like you to buy more SD cards.

Nintendo finally revealed its long-awaited Wii storage solution Wednesday evening, and it was under our noses the entire time.

The "solution" will be a software update, not a hardware offering, and allows users to open up software directly from an SD card.

Users will also be able to download titles and other software directly to cards in the console's SD slot.

That means users will have upwards of 2GB per card swap, so start stocking up on 2GB cards now.

A Wii firmware update arrives with the change in Spring 2009, said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

This is great news, and honestly, I've got quite a few VC games on my 2GB SD card right now including a handful of N64, Neo Geo and Turbo Grafx CD games and the card is nowhere near being filled.

Why not support SDHC for larger capacity? I guess it doesn't really matter as 2GB cards are pretty cheap.

True next-gen feature from Nintendo. Now that's what I call innovation. Sony and Microsoft should follow suit.

Would be nice if it would support SDHC (and maybe it will; spring is a ways away), but this will be good. This is something it should have done from the start.

do i detect a hint of sarcasm?

It's way more memory that's needed for virtual console games, so I rather use a 2gb SD Card than a hard drive on the side. Just hope hackers don't exploit it.

I thought these were already available. Oh well, my Wii hard drive still has plenty of space left.

This is what I wanted anyways, being able to directly access the SD cards instead of having to copy everything back and forth.

Awesome, can't wait for the firmware update.
