Sights and sounds are on the way to Nintendo's handheld in an effort by the Japanese gaming giant to remain competitive in the growing portable space against PSP and iPhone.
Japanese business publication Nikkei offered the first snapshot of what Nintendo's next iteration of the DS would be like this weekend: along with dual screens and a microphone, the handheld is reportedly packing a camera and ability to play music.
Thanks to a translation from Wired, the article outlines Nintendo's intention to release a new version of the DS in Japan before the end of the year with these added non-gaming features. No mention of the device's release in other regions.
While not confirmed, the report offers a convincing hint that a new DS is on the way. Along with a camera and music playback, another article outlined the new DS boasting larger screens and easier connectivity with Wii. That story has since been taken down.
Nintendo has long maintained a pure focus on gaming, but the company's push for mainstream acceptance could be fueling this new multipurpose handheld. Simultaneous press events in Tokyo and San Francisco scheduled for later in the week point to a big announcement, which is likely to be confirmation of the Nikkei report.

We don't need another MP3 player to enter the market. The iPod and Zune are good enough. It is smart to be able to play music on your DS2 but it shouldn't be a direct competitor.

the only thing I really liked my psp for was the music, . . it's a killer mp3 player, probably one of the best one out there, . . I mean Sony was the king of the portable walkman until the ipod knocked it off.
you can't really tell until you get a pair of decent phones the Bose are really good (they are twice as much as the psp itself) lol.......but the difference is astonishing.
I hope Nintendo doesn't put a crappy mp3 player and a crapbox camera, why bother.
I am definitely picking up a new psp3000 though...... compatible with the ds3 now. . . I'm there

ok, Now my Cell phone, my PSP, and my ipod play music. My car plays music. So there's 4 traveling devices that already play my music, why the hell would I want another? Of all of my music devices, I only use my iPod (if you count the car as the "speakers" since I hook my iPod up to my stereo) and that won't change any time soon.
