Microsoft spends more on casual than Halo 3 or Xbox 360

Nintendo isn't the only game-maker reaching for mainstream deep pockets. Microsoft has already begun it's biggest game-related marketing blitz in an effort to hook "casual and social segments."

According to Edge Online, the pre-Christmas advertising campaign is dubbed "Live Your Moment." It includes worldwide television, billboards, print ads, retail displays, and PR outreach, but no Master Chief, Microsoft's de facto mascot to appeal to traditional gamers.

The marketing effort arrives as Nintendo has dominated video game sales for the greater part of three years, thank to DS and Wii, which both appeal to a broader range of players.

The first television ads (seen here) started on Friday.

They have to do this. It's obvious there is tons of money to be made with the casual gamer market.

Dammitt Microsoft! Stick to what your good at (hardcore), and stop trying to be like Nintendo.

What one of there TV ad's gonna be Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates playing Xcock with a family. Then show Bill Gates bending up shoes talking about I'm a PC. I have no problem with advertisement but if you have faith in your system why spend that much money on advertising

It doesn't surprise me that Microsoft would play on this. It seems every console maker is going to try and crack that market.

ONLY nintendo is nintendo. Don't fall prey. MS is enjoying success thanks to the dedication they have to the hardcore. Nintendo is having HARDWARE success thanks to their dedication to casual (and of late their complete ignorance of the TRUE gamer). Don't forget your roots.

? why spend so much on advertising? Did you make that complaint when Sony announced they would spend $400 on marketing?

So let me get this straight Game'pro' twists them only spending a little more on the biggest market as they did on one hardcore game. And suddenly little easy to fool john-doe is running around screaming with his hands in the air. And thinking Microsoft is not making hardcore games anymore? Unbelievable how easy people can be used like a mob! No wonder I was one of only a few people that saw 9/11 for what it was ahead of time. People can't think for themselves, just a bunch of mindless controllable easy to manipulate sheep!

After seeing the staggering and unprecedented success of the wii this makes sense. The wii has broadened the gaming population to include almost all age groups. Sony shouldn't be far behind.
