Infinity Ward will put the numeral back in the Call of Duty Series, with number 6 due out in 2009.
There's a sequel out there somewhere, fellas...
Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith has confirmed that Call of Duty 6 will arrive in 2009 courtesy of series creator Infinity Ward.
"In 2009, we expect Infinity Ward to deliver another [entry of] ground-breaking quality, Call of Duty 6," said Griffith, who was speaking at the Activision Blizzard Analyst Day.
But wait a second. In a confusing twist, Griffith's presentation slates CoD6 for the "calendar year 2010." There was no clarification on the gaff, so maybe he was just keeping the launch window as wide as possible to ensure there would be no criticism if the game gets delayed.
The fifth installment of the CoD franchise, World at War, arrives this fall--minus the "5."

Wow, a game a year? This is turning into Tony Hawk... although, if they keep up the quality, there is nothing wrong with that.

One of the things I hate are 1 a year games. Each time they come out, you know there'll be an even better one the next year, so why buy the current game? I don't know how many time I had to discourage myself from buying the latest Madden game, knowing that my version will be obsolete in less than a year.
Call of Duty used to be one of those games that came out every other year, giving gamers enough time to play it and just enjoy it. Nowadays, it just seems that everything is rushed so that when the next version comes out we can be ready, but in the midst of the rushing we skip out on the fun and full gaming experience. Now don't get me wrong, these games are fun but there's always going to be that voice in your head (your Voice Of Reason) telling you, should you just wait till next? or just buy it now!

I think I'm in the majority when I say that this is the CoD we've been waiting for (and will continue to wait for).

Why is Activision's CEO confirming news that we already knew??? We already knew that COD6 was coming out & that it would be back in the capable hands of the Infinity Ward studio. All we want to know is what setting the game will take place in (i.e., WWI, WWII, Modern, Future, etc.).
VoR:
I agree that annual games tend to not live up to their potential (Madden) & suck relative to that potential. IMHO But in this instance (CoD), each installment is developed by a different studio (Treyarch v. Infinity Ward), so its essentially a game that remains in 2-year developmental cycle. This is something that I've advocated for awhile with the Madden series... It's not that I hate the Madden series; I used to be among the 1st lined up every Aug for the new installment. But after years of minimal upgrades & EA's failure to innovate & address major complaints (redundant dialogue, sub-par graphics, no application of the ESPN license that was acquired over 3 yrs ago), I took a 4-year hiatus from the series until this year. Still no ESPN presentation applied but otherwise a pretty good game.
My point is: 1.) Madden would definitely benefit from having 2 developmental studios releasing their respective version(s) alternatively every 2 years. That would truly make Madden football the "King of the gridiron". 2.) Annual released games are ok IF they embrace a similar business model. It has definitely worked for Activision's Call of Duty series. I prefer the Infinity Ward versions so I may or may not feel compelled to pick up CoD W@W this Nov.
Sorry iv the length...

Infinity Ward did an amazing job with Call of Duty 4 except for the short single player missions. Glad they are back for 6.
