Read my lips: 'No new exclusives,' says Capcom

In its 2008 financial report, famed publisher Capcom said it will no longer publish 'major titles' exclusive to a single platform, much like Resident Evil 4 was initially for GameCube.

Exclusives are last-gen, says Capcom

"All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games," reads the shareholder report, obtained by Shacknews. Accordingly, Capcom will use "an integrated development environment built to provide common development tools for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms."

The reasoning is simple. By launching high-profile games (like Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV, Mega Man 9, and Bionic Commando) on as many platforms as possible, Capcom can maximize the number of players interested in playing its games, and subsequently make the company more money.

Once a staple in video games, third-party platform exclusives have largely become a thing of the past this generation (much to the approval single console owners), given the rising cost of video game development.

This is because they have made so much more money selling the games on multiple platforms. It really is a smart move.

That's assuming the game publishers would want to shoot themselves in the foot by not releasing on the 360.

this is y sony and microsoft are screwed. they rely too much on 3rd party developers. nintendo, sega, and NEC had a large selection of 1st party games. sony and microsoft would not last a month without 3rd party support

This goes down in dumb comment history...First party can't save 1 console on it's own either

Well excuse Sony and Microsoft for not wanting to make a game out of whatever current even is happening and then throw the name Mario or Sonic in the title.

i do expect even more devs to go multi-platform, it makes more sense...but only very few take the risk of making a game for a certain console...

Back in the days exclusives were made by lets say Nintendo or Sega, but ever since non video game corporations like Sony and Microsoft got into the business, they just pay companies off. Bribes. I just found it so wrong when big 3rd party games were going to one system, as exclusives. That was just never the case pre 1996.
