PS3 hard drives beware: BioShock has mandatory 10-minute install

Get comfy, BioShock PS3 fans, because your game will require a 5GB, 10-minute mandatory install.

PS3 hard drives beware: BioShock has mandatory 10-minute install

You might want to go make a sandwich.

Clear some space on your couch and your hard drives, PS3 owners, because there's another rather lengthy, rather mandatory install coming your way.

This one arrives on October 24 with the PS3 version of BioShock, which requires a 5GB install, or roughly 10 minutes of your life, to play.

Lucky for you, while the game installs, you get to watch Rapture ads set to piano music.

Videogaming247 notes that this revelation isn't entirely a surprise. When the BBFC rated the game back in July, developer 2K said the game was likely to have an install of around 5 or 6 minutes."

It seems they were underestimating. Just a tad.

BioShock launches for the PS3 on October 24.

It sucks that almost every game for the PS3 has mandatory HDD installation. DMC4, GTA4, MGS4 and now Bioshock. If anyone has the 20GB PS3 they would have been screwed if they installed just those 4 games. I'm running out of space on my 60GB,with DL games and mandatory HDD installs. Oh, I know fanboys are going to say ' you can always install a bigger HDD," but why do I have to if the 60GB should have been good enough off the shelf. Mandatory installs look to be the norm and it is going to eat up HDD. Now I know why Sony made the move to 160GB with their new SKU.

I still don't understand why they are mandatory. Goodness forbid you wait like another minute at a loading screen.

It actually a lot of times has nothing to do with load times (although it can be used for that as well). Data can be read faster off a SATA HDD than it can off of a blu-ray disc, meaning that the game could potentially "run faster" if it were completely installed to hard drives assuming that the code is written properly. Companies can achieve higher framrates and can have more accurate physics and whatnot if the cell processors get the data faster. Granted, many companies use the hdd simply to speed up load times but that's not always all there is to it.

So the real question is, what is the tradeoff for gamers for this one? Is it solely for less loading screens or does it actually improve performance? And an even more important question is what do game developers see as acceptable for installed content? My PC has ~1.75TB of storage and is used for gaming, yet my games don't take up anywhere near that much space (maybe 100GB at most, I don't even think it uses that much. And before you ask 75% of the rest of the space is filled with my video editing projects). With the install sizes increasing I'm beginning to worry that we'll start needing more space than is available on a PS3 (currently 500GB)

That's no longer the box art for the PS3 version, you can see the current box for the game in the Game Info section in the top-right of the screen.

And Just think. The Xbox360 version has no install and the game looks exactly the same.

The mandatory install is great, however its MANDATORY and you have no option unlike the new Xbox360 update that allows installs of the entire disk OPTIONAL.
Almost all games coming out on the PS3 will involve mandatory installs. Learn how to change that HDD fast.

The 10 minutes and 5GB I can live with. It's not that big of a deal to me.

Even though the installation is long, it will be worth the time, because the game is awesome and is one of my favorites. Anyone who i going to buy this game for the first time you will all have a blast at playing it.
