In order to make games more accessible to the hearing impaired, Ubisoft today announced plans to include subtitles in all internally-developed titles.

Far Cry 2 the first Ubisoft game to support subtitles

The first games to support subtitles will be Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia, and Shaun White Snowboarding.

"This commitment entails modifications to some of our game engines, as well as the inclusion of subtitles in the conception phase of game development," said Ubisoft, the world's sixth largest publisher.

Considered one of the most common disabilities, hearing loss is said to affect more than 10 percent of the world's population.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea to me. Sometimes even I need a little help.

I've been wondering when they, developers, were going to start including in-game subtitles, not just for the cut scenes. Not many people know but a vast number of gamers have either hard of hearing or hearing impariment (deaf).

I know we have a member within the GamePro community that has hard of hearing and he loves playing video games and I know he'll be gald about this news. Good news for everyone all around.

Mine was self inflicted....... 6 Marshall Super lead 100w heads going through 6 4x12 cabinets will do that to a person.
It crept up on me though, you wake up one day and your making everything just a bit louder, turning up the treble cause your high end is blown.

Your gonna see a lot of deaf older people in the next 20 or 30 years due to the ipod craze. They even have apps that can jack up your ipod volume by like 20% too, . . . nice

By the way, you CAN make your ears bleed from excessive volume, . . and it hurts real bad.

Subtitles are a good thing for people with the need, I'm sure Lou Ferriggano is doing back flips this morning upon "hearing" this news.

this should be the norm and not the exception...

I agree with you. I am not sure if this will also be gameplay subtitles as well though.

As a hearing impaired person, it is my belief that ALL videogames should have in-game captions (not just during cutscenes.) The game that was the worst for me was Assassin's Creed. With as much dialogue as that game I had, I felt SO lost at sometimes because I was only able to pick out bits and pieces of what was being said.
Also some games with shitty soundtracks (such as sports games) should have subtitles included as well. That way we can hear what is going on in the game, and have our own soundtrack (in case the game does not allow custom soundtrack.) Good to hear they will be doing that with Shaun White Snowboarding.

I personally like subtitles. I put the subtitles on whenever I watch a movie and when I play games.
