Official Xbox Magazine reported Tuesday that Microsoft has tasked Gearbox, not Bungie, with development rights to Halo 4.
I'm getting too old for this!
When Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford said his company was working on something big last February, he may have been referring to something really, really big. Like Halo 4. For a new Xbox console.
You read that correctly, but before you go spreading the news to every Xbox forum on the Net take note that this is simply a rumor being peddled by Official Xbox Magazine, perhaps to increase sales for its October and holiday issues.
That said, the move would make sense for Microsoft, which is unofficially looking for a new developer for its Halo franchise (newly independent Bungie was rumored to be unsatisfied in the role of a Halo game-crunching machine). Gearbox, long a venerable producer of quality FPS fare, would fit the bill as a suitable successor.

Definition of Epic Fail: Alternate developer creates Halo 4, extending a trilogy that is already over. The game falls short of it's production costs due to a new developer with less talent and creativity (and weakened fan base due to angry Halo fans). The new system can't keep a profit and becomes the next Dreamcast
