Want to talk hobbies with Nintendo savant Shigeru Miyamoto? Too bad, because he's reportedly been banned from doing so by Nintendo.
Shigeru Miyamoto. Interests include: Absolutely Nothing
Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has successfully turned many of his hobbies into multi-million dollar franchises for his company, so his company is allegedly taking steps to protect future Miyamoto-produced titles from prying eyes and inqusitive reporters.
If a new anonymous report is to be believed, those steps include a ban on Miyamoto talking about his hobbies in public.
Sound a bit harsh? Maybe not, if you look at the man's track record. In his early years an adventure in the backyard produced The Legend of Zelda. Gardening begot Pikmin. A trip to the gym and yoga class led to the hottest peripheral on the planet in Wii Fit and the Balance Board. A love of puzzles and puppies kick started the career of the Nintendo DS, and basically made that portable the most popular and sought after piece of video game-playing tech in the world. Wii Music... well, let's just say Miyamoto and his hobbies are human, after all.
So you can understand Nintendo's concern about the usually very open and honest developer talking to the press about any hobbies we don't know about yet.
"It's not that they are naughty, illegal or even nerdish, it's just that any glimpse inside his head could be worth billions," writes Leo Lewis in the Times Online. "Particularly so now: the Wii still sells strongly around the world, but its successor is the talking point. Unfortunately, the only place where the discussion has any grounding is inside Mr Miyamoto's head."
It would appear that from here on out, Miyamoto's big hobby will be a heaping helping of "absolutely nothing."

He is a genius when it comes to video games. And Nintendo does not want to go back to being last in the video game business so they tell him to shut up to keep the games rolling

He shoots ping pong balls out of his anus. Nintendo didn't want to tarnish their softcore image.
