Nintendo: Third-party games 'sell better' on Wii

Nintendo is challenging the assumption that third-party games don't sell well on Wii. In fact, one senior official suggests that said games sell better on Wii than either Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

"There is an assumption out there that simply isn't true," said Denise Kaigler, Nintendo's vice president of corporate affairs, in an interview with GameDaily published Thursday.

"We are selling third-party games and they are doing very well, and better than our competitors," Kaigler said while referring to the pictured line graph. "We're setting the record straight."

Despite conventional wisdom suggesting otherwise, Nintendo Wii does lay claim to more than 20 third-party titles with sales greater than 400,000 units, a respectable level by any metric. What's more, several other third-party games have sold millions, including Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, and Guitar Hero 3, the best-selling version on all platforms.

It's worth noting, however, that Nintendo's chart combines both first- and third-party sales. Therefore, it's still unclear how succesfful third-party games are on Wii, independent of first-party ones.

But whatever the reality, the assumption still remains. "It's the toughest platform for third party developers," said Doom creator John Carmack, speaking of Wii in an interview with Tom's Games.

"I'm thrilled that Nintendo has had this kind of success because they took some risky bets, and it's always nice some bold thinking pay off for them. But I don't think we'll be on the platform."

Maybe Wii standards are so low that crap sells. Casual gamers wouldn't know a good game if it bit them in the ass.

There are some really good 3rd party games for Wii... I own a bunch. Godfather, No More Heroes, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Okami, RE4 and Tiger Woods.

A Lot would be an understatement... more like a sea, ocean, stratosphere, or universe of crap games. A tiny handful of good ones.... have they even reached 20 good titles out of what now, 200? The good to bad game ratio is insanely pathetic.
