Nintendo says Wii successor in development

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed Tuesday that his company is indeed working on new hardware, but don't expect to see it anytime soon.

In a Forbes interview published Tuesday, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata freely admitted the company is already working on new hardware.

Don't go thinking that the revelation means a Wii successor is coming anytime soon, however, as Iwata said he doesn't view video game hardware as "particularly interesting."

"We are always preparing for the next hardware," Iwata said. "We are under development. ... But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games."

So don't expect any more details about that for a long while, especially since Nintendo just made more money on software over the past year than its two main competitors, Sony and Microsoft, combined.

Iwata was worried about one issue, however: How Nintendo would surprise gamers and the gaming industry as utterly and totally as it has done with both the DS and Wii.

"Every hardware needs some revolutionary features," Iwata said. "This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can't tell.

"It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different," he continued. "If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again."

Nintendo was not immediately available for further comment when contact by GamePro on Wednesday.

This great to hear. Nintendo always(most of the time) puts it down for games

Not too surprised really. Nintendo was developing ideas for the Wii around the time the Gamecube was released and we still didn't get anything until the Gamecube was about 5 years old.

yeh but there third party games usually suck but still with so many first party games they sell consoles like crazy

All console makers start planing for their next gen console as soon as their current console hits the streets. It takes time to develop the end product, but there are a lot of people who think it's just a snap of a finger.

Wonder how much they will change gaming next gen? hope they take motion sensing to a new level. It is hard to go back to playing last gen games on current gen consoles with last gen controllers. Ruins the experiance after you have had a taste of next gen controls. One thing is for sure though. Nintendo wont use their fanbase to push a movie format through.
