Miyamoto: 'Traditional games are what I am best at'

Though he splits his time now making both family-friendly and familiar hits, Nintendo mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto says he's better in making the latter.

"Making traditional games is what I am best at," said Miyamoto, in an interview with The Telegraph on Thursday. "Because games of that nature take upwards of two or three years to make, we always have to keep the teams working on those projects.

"They are all working on more Mario, Zelda and Pikmin projects," he reaffirmed, "and they all work in close proximity to me, so I can keep a good eye on them."

Additionally, Miyamoto admitted that traditional controllers (a design he invented) still have their place in video games, despite Nintendo's focus on motion-sensing. "What the Wii remote and motion control allows us to do is things we couldn't have done before. But of course there are also things that are accomplished better with buttons."

Miyamoto's remarks come at a time when many long-time gamers feel disenfranchised by Nintendo and their focus on uninitiated players, who prefer pick-up and play games as opposed to deep and epic ones like Zelda.

THE VERDICT by Blake Snow Blake Snow's Avatar It's comforting to hear Miyamoto make such comments, having been a long-time fan of his previous (and some) current work. Though he's terribly misguided with Wii Music (that "game" is boring), I genuinely believe his favorable view of traditional gamers and the games they love.
