Nintendo agrees: Wii friend codes are unruly

Nintendo's not stupid; even they know friend codes suck (they just haven't figured out a way to protect gamer privacy while encouraging community).
An inconvenient 12-digit friend code
"I don't think the current system we have with friend codes is perfect," admitted Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, in an interview with GameDaily published on Monday.
"However," he added, "we think it's very important to create a world where we can assure that there will be no harassment for online beginners (such as children), and we really want to assure the security and safety for them to do that."
The statement comes nearly two years since the Wii launched in 2006. Unlike Xbox 360 or PS3 owners, which enjoy universal I.D.s across any online-enabled game, Wii owners are forced to enter 12-digit "friend codes" for every applicable game if they wish to play their friends online. They can still play strangers online, however, without the use of codes.
Fortunately, it seems improvements may be on the way, suggests Iwata. "We will be studying this on an ongoing basis in order to improve Nintendo's own circumstances where people can freely and safely enjoy the communications through the net."

Unlike Ps3 and 360, Wii owners have to type in there social security number to call a friend!

Satoru is just stating the obvious here, but I can understand why they chose to use friend codes...hopefully they can find a way to make things more user friendly while still covering their asses.

They really need to revise this. It's a pain just to play my Brother in Florida on Smash. Getting codes, and internet connections over wifi to all work at the same time has been rediculous. I hope that Iwata gets this going soon.
