Gears of War creator says controllers look 'like alien spaceships'

Introducing an "alien spaceship"

"I hope if there's a new Xbox that there'll be fewer buttons on the controller," he told CVG in an interview published today. In addition to doubting an Xbox 360 successor, he said, "If you look at a controller right now it looks like an alien spaceship."

Bleszinski's statement marks the second time this year that the budding designer has openly criticized the complexity of Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers.

In February, he told GameTrailers: "I've always felt that video game controllers have too many buttons. Expecting a person to figure out how to use a [traditional] controller is like saying, 'Hey, you need to learn Spanish before you can enjoy this game.'"

As an alternative solution to cluttered buttons, the Gears creator endorsed camera-recognition and even the Nintendo Wii. "Not a lot of games use the waggle well," he said, "but Super Mario Galaxy (and Zack and Wiki) for example use it perfectly."

He speaks the truth. I'm going thru some of my backlog and it's just nuts the button fumbling you have to go thru for high tension moments in games to access a weapon when the selection is linked to the D-pad but you have to keep moving with the left stick, while hitting the a button to jump because the boss is smashing the smashing the platform you're on.
