Updater beware: PlayStation 3 firmware 2.40 has apparently bricked a bunch of consoles, causing Sony to pull the update and revert to version 2.36.

After widespread problems were reported regarding the recent PlayStation 3 firmware 2.40 update, Sony has apparently pulled the update, reverting back to the 2.36 build.

According to gaming blog Kotaku, 2.36 is now the most recent version of firmware available for download.

"We were just prompted to download version 2.36 after having skipped the most recent pair of PS3 software updates," wrote Kotaku's Michael McWhertor.

Sony has not yet made an official announcement regarding the snafu, which has allegedly led to several bricked PS3 consoles. Again, there is no confirmation from Sony other than a "we are looking into it," and no numbers available to show how widespread the issue has become.
