Evidence mounting of Xbox 360 price drop to $299

Three new reports have surfaced lending further credibility to the leaked K-Mart ad from Friday, which listed a "new low price" of $299 for the Xbox 360 in July.

Update: Leaked GameStop promotional materials obtained by Kotaku confirm that Xbox 360 will drop in price to $299 on July 13.

Original story: On Friday, the same day as the leaked K-mart ad, Hollywood Reporter claimed one "major retailer" told them that Microsoft will slash the price of the 20GB Xbox 360 by $50 before E3. The source, the paper says, requested anonymity.

Subsequently, Joystiq on Monday said it received a scanned image of a Radio Shack advertisement directly from an employee which reflects the same $299 price drop. The ad is said to take effect on July 13, the same as the Kmart ad, and a day before Microsoft's E3 media briefing on Monday, July 14.

Unfortunately, the 20GB price drop may only be a fire sale, that is if a reliable source close to Ars Technica is to be believed. According to the insider, Microsoft will reduce the 20GB MSRP to $299 at E3, but only until current inventory depletes to make room for an incoming 60GB Xbox 360.

"As we launch the 60GB SKU throughout July, the 20GB SKU will DISCONTINUE," the trusty mole told Ars.

Last year, Sony dropped the price of the 60GB PS3 from $499 to $399, only to discontinue the model shortly after to make room for scaled down 20GB and 80GB versions.

THE VERDICT by Blake Snow Blake Snow's Avatar It seems by the total of four separate reports that Microsoft will drop the 20 gigger to $299. Let's just hope the Ars mole is wrong on the firesale because Xbox 360 needs to have a $299 price point (or lower) with hard drive if Microsoft wishes to even have a chance at catching Ninty.

Blake Snow: I don't think it is even remotely possible for MS to catch Nintendo. I mean it was ahead by a year and dropped it in less time than that. Do you really see this console war being a see-saw battle?

I desperately need to get a new one. I can hardly hear my game over the airplane-engine-fan inside my Xbox.

I'll wait to see how the 60GB 360 works out, I won't get a new 20GB for $299.99 thats for sure.

Im going to hold off on a 360 until I hear positive reports about the hardware. I just wish microsoft would fix the hardware. I would have already bought a 360 if the rrod wasnt an issue.

Segaho182ed, I don't. I think Ninty has this gen in the bag thanks to the pop culture phenom that is the Wii. That said, I think (and have always thought) that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are too expensive for "most people," thereby not as many gamers can enjoy their respective libraries. And of course, a price drop will surely spur sales, something both Microsoft, Sony, and gamers would benefit from.
