Activision makes Call of Duty: World at War official

Fifth game in the lauded military shooter series returns to the Second World War as it switches development hands from Infinity Ward to Treyarch.

Activision made Call of Duty: World at War official Friday night in an exclusive cinematic trailer on GameTrailers. The follow up to the widely-praised Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which we named the "best shooter of 2007," will be hitting sometime before the end of this year.

Although few details could be garnered from the trailer, a number of tantalizing bits have been revealed by the Official Xbox Magazine UK. The publication teased details on the game following the trailer's debut. Developer Treyarch is helming development of the game, which returns to World War II this time in the Pacific theater of operations. Along with the change in setting, new weapons and items are being thrown into the mix; unfortunately, no further elucidation on exactly what sort of equipment would be added for this fifth installment.

Most exciting is news of split-screen cooperative play for two and up to four online. Naturally, this includes Xbox Live. No word on PlayStation 3 and/or Wii versions and if such game would support online play; however, it's safe to assume that a PlayStation 3 version is on the way.

Expect a huge push for Call of Duty: World at War when it closes in on release. The unprecedented success of the last game has Activision setting its sights on another mega shooter hit. As of late January, Activision had reported Call of Duty 4 as selling over 7 million copies worldwide. We'll have to wait and see if this fifth game will have the company and gamers shouting Tora! Tora! Tora! too.

Hey! At least were not killing stupid Nazi's anymore. I was disappointed that CoD4 went to the Modern Middle Eastern scene, even though I throughally enjoyed the game and online play. I'm excited to see that they are finally covering the Pacific Theater, though I heard rumors that some of the story is going to be about Russia invading Germany... Blah! I wouldn't mind playing as a Russian as long as I'm invading Mongolia and Northern China!

Hey, Treyarch isn't that bad now. COD3 was just as fun as COD2 or more in my opinion. I like that there is actually vehicles that you can use in MP, it changes it up a little...

From what I've seen on the trailer, this looks like a darker Call of Duty. Sure it went back to world war theme but for once it really looks interesting. I really, really hope that you get to use the katanas in the game, that right there will definently make me buy the game day 1.
