Little planet, big implications for PS3

The highly anticipated user-generated content-driven PS3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet will feature PlayStation Eye functionality, "sackboy plushies," and the ability to send "risky" content privately to friends, Media Molecule confirmed in an interview with PS3Fanboy Thursday.

The customizable title will also boast a "whole leap of levels" that are strung together to form the game's Story Mode, said Media Molecule's Mark Healy. "A very loose story, but incredibly funny at certain points," he said.

As for the private levels, players can make them using LBP's feature-rich level editor. It won't be a total free-for-all, however, as Healey said there is a post-grievance system involving screenshots and a policing force of some kind. He declined to comment about what it might mean for really risque UGC levels.

PlayStation Eye support was also confirmed during the interview. "You can wear a cardboard box and put a sticker of yourself there. And presto, you have a little creepy version of yourself walking around in the game. So yes, you can absolutely do that," Healy said.

And the aforementioned "Sackboy plushies" are on the way, said SCEA PR, but no release date was given.

THE VERDICT by Jack Loftus Jack Loftus's Avatar Console killer applications are games that do more than just set sales records, they're games that push more hardware out the door. GTAIV and Metal Gear Solid 4, while popular games, are not killer apps. LittleBigPlanet, on the other hand, has the potential to really broaden the PS3's base as the console's first true killer app. Let's hope it succeeds, for the industry's sake.

Still not too sure what to think of this title... It looks pretty cool and different, but how will it hold up after hours and hours of play? I guess we'll see.

I don't even understand what this game is about. I hear all the hype but I will need to see it in action first.

How can this game appeal a wider game base for PS owners when they have continually bashed "kiddy" type games like most of them on the Wii and bashed games like Viva Pinata or Banjo AND ANY OTHER TYPE "KIDDY" GAME? LOL I guess things change when it hits "their" console. LOL
