Computer companies insist PC gaming isn't dying

Despite flagging sales and rampant piracy, PC game companies say the platform is thriving, much like consoles, given the success of several MMO games.
PC gaming hasn't aged well
"PC gaming is not only not in decline, it's alive and well and growing," said Roy Taylor, CTO of the PC Gaming Alliance, which was ironically formed to help boost PC game sales.
Along with Microsoft and Dell, Taylor points to the recent success of Age of Conan and the crack-like loyalty of World of Warcraft players as confirmation. Indeed, both games, which are MMORPGs, and other online flash game portals have done very well.
The same cannot be said of retail, however, and popular console genres like shooters, sports games, and adventure titles.
"I wouldn't be surprised to see [PC gaming] retail continue to decline over time,"says Kevin Unangst, director of Windows gaming at Microsoft. "But that should be more than offset by new revenue from online fantasy buffs and networked Scrabble addicts. When you take those in aggregate, we see nothing but growth."
Information from The Boston Globe was used in this report.

PC gaming has a purely different audience than the console audience. At the same time, consoles which were once inferior to PC power are now just has powerful. PC gaming is not dead but it's not innovating like the consoles to draw a large consumer base.

Everyone says PC gaming is dying as soon as new consoles come out...Then in a few years after launch when Console games look crap compared to PC games, those same people sing a different tune. Here's food for thought: As of now, no console system can run or have a game look like Crysis. Period. The hardware inside the Xbox360 and PS3 is too slow. By next year, almost ALL PC games will look like Crysis. Maybe even better. Where does that leave console games in 2-3 years when the hardware inside cannot be upgraded? Looking last generation. PC gaming survives because its the ONLY platform that can create innovation and technology for AI and Graphics. Consoles cannot. They did not create Crysis or Supreme Commancer on a console.
