In-game Cross Media Bar, Trophies coming to PS3

Sony on Tuesday announced firmware update (v2.40) that will include in-game access to the PS3 menu and the introduction of Xbox-like Achievements called "Trophies."

The announcement comes by way of the official PlayStation blog, in which Eric Lempel, director of PSN, said the update would be "launching soon."

Though details are sparse, PlayStation 3 owners since launch have criticized the absence of in-game access to the PlayStation menu, also called the Cross Media Bar or XMB for short. Both the Xbox 360, and to a lesser extent, Nintendo Wii, offer full or partial access to their respective menus at any time during gameplay.

Regarding the Trophies announcement, Lempel described them as an "exciting new feature that we'll be providing more details on soon." Suffice it to say the feature, presumably coupled with the forthcoming PlayStation Home platform, is Sony's answer to Microsoft's addictive Achievement Points.

THE VERDICT by Blake Snow Blake Snow's Avatar This is good news for PS3 owners. I love me some anytime access to the Xbox 360 interface and the ability to at least pause my games using the Home button while playing Wii. Hip, hip, hooray!

the absense of those trophies are the only reason why i don't own a ps3 game at all. hopefully they'll be for MGS IV

that's good news for ps3 owners bad news for me since I have all the systems. we already busted 360 owners trolling and not playing their xboxes now its time to catch the ps3 trolls!!! GOOD WILL HUNTING!

now comes the time when all the sony fanboys who bashed xbl achievements will now say trophies are the better and how sony is original. Don't get me wrong i don't need either but it does add to the replay value.but I'm sure ticl and the other fanboys will say how great this is even though they discounted the idea when on xbl.

I've turned into a sort of achievement whore so I'm loving this trophy/achievement concept. Now the question is how soon will this update be released.
