E3 Rumor: Microsoft will slash Xbox 360 price, add new 60GB model

Add a new E3 rumor to the pile: Microsoft is apparently ready to finally slash the price of the Xbox 360 and introduce a new SKU as part of an effort to fend off Sony.

It's bigger. My HDD, it's bigger!

It's bigger. My HDD, it's bigger!

Microsoft hardware sales slipped again in May, according to the latest NPD numbers, and apparently the company is going to use E3 as the perfect platform to try and regain momentum against rival Sony.

According to one analyst and the site Trusted Reviews, the counterattack will be new hardware and a US price cut (Europe and other territories had one earlier this year).

The redesign will allegedly be the now infamous 60GB Xbox 360, which Trusted Reviews says will make its debut in July at E3.

As for a US hardware price cut, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich said the rumor mills will be rewarded for their accuracy at E3 as well.

Trusted Reviews' source adds that the 60GB Xbox 360 will officially arrive sometime in the first half of August after the E3 announcement.

THE VERDICT by Jack Loftus Jack Loftus's Avatar If every Microsoft Xbox 360 rumor came true, we'd have 12 different SKUs on the market right now. Enough is enough! If it does come true, let's just hope the new one has better heat sinks, or at least comes packed in ice. E3 can't come soon enough!

I'll believe it when I see it, not that Microsoft isn't going to start slashing prices at some point.

There is almost always a response to slow sales. Sony does it, Microsoft does it, Nintendo does it. Everytime you see slow sales or a dip in sales, something will most likely have to be done. Despite the fact that rumors often tend to go down the drain, this is a feasible retaliation to falling behind PS3 in sales in May. PS3 can attest its sales to Metal Gear Solid 4 and a solid fall line-up. So Microsoft is realizing that these factors are giving the PS3 a push in sales. So they need to have an answer for the recent dip in sales, and boost in PS3's sales. Which is a price cut and possibly a new SKU. It's not entirely dismissable. But if one game (MGS4) can sway May sales and most definitely June sales, than something needs to be done on MS' side to counter it.

Jasper chipset here I come. Honestly I have been dying to get a 360 for a long time. I refused to pay the insane prices for a console that over heats with a tiny hard drive. This better be true because I am itching to buy a 360 right now!
