Mii too: sources claim avatars to launch on Xbox Live this autumn

Microsoft's counter to Nintendo Miis and PlayStation Home purportedly slated for launch with the Xbox Live fall update.

Avatars: The Legend of Xbox Live

Avatars: The Legend of Xbox Live

Tipped off by a marketing survey, a poster at NeoGAF has offered tantalizing details on long-rumored Xbox Live avatars. Touted as a replacement for GamerTag pictures, avatars are animated characters that can be fully customized from their physique to clothing and accessories.

Avatars will launch with the Xbox Live fall update later this year, the source states. Given the company's purposeful cancellation of the service's spring update, it could be surmised that work on avatars was the reason. Launching such an ambitious feature would require extensive resources--just ask Sony about their difficulties in getting PlayStation Home up and running.

Incidentally, Xbox Live avatars would be a direct response to PlayStation Home and its virtual environments, not to mention Nintendo Miis. A report by Joystiq claims confirmation of Microsoft's avatar push, stating that the company intends to take the best features of both when it supposedly launches this autumn.

Its funny that Microsoft said that they are gonna take the best of each avatar system. Its like saying that they are gonna copy each avatar system. I'v have lost faith in Microsoft originality.
