Sources: Microsoft to wet lips with new singing game

Loose lips sink ships--or at least sing about them. New details surface about unannounced Microsoft project that enables you to sing along to your personal music collection.

Following our earlier report regarding a mysterious Microsoft project codenamed "Lips," more details have emerged about the Xbox 360 game that purportedly enables you to sing along to your own music. A post on NeoGAF claims the karaoke-styled singing game will launched before the end of the year.

Singing requires use of a pair of special microphones included in the retail packaging; however, these supposedly aren't ordinary microphones. Wrapping your chops around these microphones causes lights to pulsate to the rhythm of your voice. Additionally, motion sensing chips enable you to score points by moving the microphone to the beat while singing.

"Lips" will pack in around licensed tracks with additional tunes available via Xbox Live. The big news, however, is a plan to allow music to be copied from CDs and/or digital music players and used in-game. While the game won't automatically process the lyrics, the source claims that it scores your performance based on intonation and vocal pitch. You're also afforded the option of inputting lyrics manually.

Microsoft's move into the music genre should come as no surprise. The company embarked on a karaoke game for the original Xbox five years ago with Xbox Music Mixer. Unfortunately, it was critically panned, averaging 60% on GameRankings. A second attempt at crafting such a game could be a push to tap into the burgeoning market for casual music titles ranging from Sony's SingStar to Activision's Guitar Hero. Either way, we'll likely know in about a month when Microsoft unveils all at E3.

THE VERDICT by Tracy Erickson Tracy Erickson's Avatar This isn't shocking in the least, although the bit about being able to use your own music in the game is potentially revolutionary. It could honestly blow the lid off music gaming.

Singing along to your own music is a great idea if they can pull it off. We all do it anyway.

codizzle587 go buy a game of shut the hell up and cry somewhere else. I've had my 360 since launch, technically before(contest winner) and I've had it go out once from rrod. Your 5th time is gotta be a joke unless you're sticking it in an oven when playing.
