Dual Shock 3 to split into new two-piece controller, sources claim

Sony designing a new two-part version of the Dual Shock 3 with motion-sensitivity in both units cites publication.
Splitfish's fragFX offers a two-part controller for PS3, but no motion controls.
Sources close to GamesIndustry.biz have revealed that Sony is hard at work on a new PlayStation 3 controller. Like Nintendo's Wii remote and nunchuk attachment, the revised controller splits a Dual Shock 3 into two individual pieces each containing motion-control components. Sony has declined comment, although sources claim developers have already been issued prototypes.
Given the immense success enjoyed by Nintendo's Wii, it's entirely possible that Sony could hope to compete with a similar controller of its own. Although the Dual Shock 3 already contains an accelerometer for motion controls, this new device would feature one in each unit. In other words, it would enable motion control in either controller much like the Wii remote and nunchuk.
The incorporation of motion-sensing technology into the controller isn't new, but the concept of having two separate units that work together is taken directly out of Nintendo's play book. Of course, the release of the Dual Shock 3 came after intense pressure was put on Sony for not including vibration feedback. Originally the company claimed that it wasn't possible to pair motion controls and rumble in their controller, but were forced to engineer the Dual Shock 3 when Nintendo's Wii remote proved otherwise.
Sony isn't the only party supposedly interested in the idea of one-upping Nintendo at the intuitive motion control game. Rumors have also been flying about Microsoft's intention of releasing a remote controller-like peripheral later this year; however, the company denies the claims.

The controller sounds innovative, but I'm glad I don't have a PS3. But hey on the bright side, at least by the time they finish releasing controls you'll have four so you can play death match with your friends at home on RFOM2. (assuming the person has any friends)

Man, poor Tray Erickson, he sure is getting a lot of heat for his "The Veredict" section on how his Xbox 360 got the red ring of death (initiating an ongoing flame bait). Hopefully this "Veredict" will lower the angst of those who have already labeled him as "biased". See kids, one can criticize both MS and Sony and not be a "company rep in disguise". jajajaja
