Alone in the Dark to allow on demand level selection

Amid the rising trend of unfinished games, Atari's upcoming Alone in the Dark will let players skip forward to see the ending, provided you complete a "substantial" part of the game first.

"So many games these days don't allow people to easily get to the end, and if they get frustrated there's no easy way for them to advance the story," said newly appointed Atari president Phil Harrison, in an interview with Game Trailers published on Thursday.

"What we did with [Alone in the Dark] is to add the chapter select sequences, much like a DVD menu, which allows the player to navigate around the story a little," he added. "You can't cheat and get right to the end at the very beginning. You have to play a substantial part of the game in order to see the ending, but I think that brings value to both the player and [game] creator."

As Harrison puts it, gamers want to get their money's worth, and designers like when all of their hard work can be experienced.

Alone in the Dark, the series of which is considered the original gangster of survival horror games, arrives on Wii, Xbox 360, PS2 and PC on June 24, and later this fall on PS3.

LMAO. Original Gangster. I haven't heard that phrase in years.

I think this game is going to flop just like most of the NEXT GEN games. Crackdown let you fight the boss first if you found him but it was reallly a tuff fight. Besides GTA4, the last game I played that had me hooked from beginning to end was GoW2. Truthfully, everything has been a letdown to me all glamour and no substance.

I love that trailer! I really want to play this game but the only gameplay I've seen was pretty cheesy :(

You'd have to be a wimp to skip to the ending. What's the point of the game if your going to give up, and just jump to the ending?

Get to see the end without completing the game????!! That's some BS! Talk about cheating yourself out of money. A $60 video game should keep you entertained for MONTHS!!!
