Despite a lack of ample storage space, Activision makes good on its word in announcing today that Wii owners will be getting downloadable Guitar Hero expansion tracks.
Guitar Hero downloads coming to Wii
According to Activision, the newly confirmed Guitar Hero World Tour will be the "first game ever in the Guitar Hero franchise to allow in-game downloadable content on Wii."
The news comes as several publishers have voiced concern over the the lack of a Wii hard drive, which discourages developers from releasing downloadable content on Wii, unlike Xbox 360 and PS3 which both support hard drive storage. Nintendo has yet to propose a viable solution.
The Wii does have internal storage for saving game content, but only 512MB worth -- hardly enough to meet the download demands of wired gamers. And while the system supports the use of SD cards for storage, games and content cannot be played from external cards currently.
In March, Harmonix said the Wii version of Rock Band (June 22) would not support downloadable tracks like Xbox 360 and PS3 versions "because the Wii's online capabilities and potential have yet to be fully realized, [and] we wanted to wait before we explored online functionality for Rock Band to ensure that players get the high-quality of online performance they've come to expect."

I kinda wish they would release the extra songs on disc, since I'm running out of storage on Wii. Well, if they keep pushing for DLC, Nintendo will have to do something about that storage eventually. They should just release a firmware upgrade that lets us play stuff off the SD cards direclty... that would be sufficient!

A 2G SD card has 4 times the capacity of Wii internal memory, so if you pop 2 of those in the 2 slots, it would give us 8 times more storage space.

caffeinedisaster Posted at: 05/22/08 at 12:12 PM PST Why not just sell SD cards with the content already on it? [p][p] thats a good idea, but how much would they charge?

I thought it had 2 SD slots... yeah I guess it's just the one... so I guess it's still easier to swap SD cards then to delete/copy to the Wii... you have to get up to change the game disc anyway... or you can just get a 4G SD card. My bad!

caffeinedisaster Posted at: 05/22/08 at 12:12 PM PST Why not just sell SD cards with the content already on it?That wouldn't fix the problem at all... You'd still have to delete stuff from the Wii memory and copy the content of the SD card to the Wii internal mem
