PlayStation 3 software sales surge 410% in April thanks to GTAIV

Sony's Jack Tretton had a big, wet kiss for Grand Theft Auto IV this week, as the title helped pump up its PlayStation business.

Jack Tretton was all smiles on Thursday following the release of another round of NPD monthly sales data, as his bread and butter console saw software sales grow 410% in the US in April.

Leading the pack was the duo of Grand Theft Auto IV and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, which combined for a software sales surge of over two million units.

"Clearly, the tremendous legacy of Grand Theft Auto on PlayStation, combined with the blockbuster launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue packed a one-two punch with consumers at retail this month," said Tretton, who is the president of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

On the hardware side, the PS3 landed in third behind the Xbox 360 and the so far untouchable Wii in April, but Tretton didn't seem to mind. Not with Metal Gear Solid 4 just around the corner.

this means either the older games didnt sell anything or these games sold like crazy.

*lol* It still amuses me that people wait to buy a console until certain game comes out....I think the "REAL" gamers have already bought a Ps3 and a 360....Everyone else is just kind of out there buying to buy.......and GTA4 sold more on the 360 than the PS3....@ least right now it has....But seriously who out there that isn't a real gamer hasn't at least bought one of these consoles by now....gimme a break.

i dont care about sales anymore. give me some games to play on the ps3 damnit. finally a true AAA exclusive on the ps3, MGS4. i can wipe the dust off my ps3 now. mario kart and gta4 have been getting all my attention

I mean a big part of why I bought a PS3 was because of MGS4 and I bought my PS3 so damn long ago.

I personally don't think MGS4 is a system seller. GTA4 sold more games/systems because of its history of controversy and newbies hear about all the new " adult content" made them want to purchase the game/system. But a few weeks later, if you check CL or ebay, their are thousands of copies being resold, some because they beat the game and others because it didn't live up to the hype,in their eyes. Either way, MGS4 has its fan base but I "know" you won't see sales anywhere close to GTA4 or H3. We will see in a few weeks.

Playstation has been building up steam for months now, and now with Haze and MGS4 just around the corner it will see more systems off the shelves (less so with Haze). Its not going to touch the 360 just quite yet, but its good to see more people buying the much more powerfull of the two "NextGen" systems. Now if only someone could actually harness the power that the PS3 holds and make a truly astonishing game then we're in buisness.
