Game Informer unveils Guitar Hero IV drums

Six piece drum kit is quieter than Rock Band's five piece, is wireless, and supports both a natural bounce and intensity detection for drum rolls and harder hits.

"One of the things we really wanted to do was to make it quieter than our competitor's kid," project director Brian Bright told Game Informer in the June 2008 issue. "The [Rock Band] drums are loud as hell and it's distracting. Everyone else in the room is like 'Shut up!'"

In addition to quieter drums, the pads themselves track "velocity data" for hit intensity, much like professional electronic kits, so harder (or softer) hits will sound accordingly -- something Rock Band drums don't support. Natural bounce for better rolls is also supported, something Game Informer favorably confirmed in their play test.

To top it off, Activision said gamers can expect better durability of Guitar Hero drums, this amid isolated reports of failing Rock Band kits. "The team we're working with has been making hardware for years," said Bright in the same interview. "These guys know it inside and out. This thing is not going to crack."

Guitar Hero IV will launch in late 2008 for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and PS2. The game will support drums, vocals, bass, guitar, online multiplayer, and create a song mode, as previously revealed by Game Informer.

THE VERDICT by Blake Snow Blake Snow's Avatar This is very cool news for rhythm game fans, aspiring fake drummers, and musicians in general. Hat tip for the scoop, GI.

Looks cool, but HUGE! It will definitely feel more like a real drum kit... but at that point, shouldn't you just get the real thing? I know it's been said before, but that kit will take up my whole living room!

defconsquad Posted at: 05/14/08 at 10:38 AM PST Cymbals are nice, but where's the COW BELL??
Reminds me of that SNL skit with Will Ferrell were his a folk singer in recording studio and he keeps screaming, " We need more Cow Bell!"

Yeah AANTHUNDER, that was the joke! One of the greatest SNL skits of all time. I just watched the Dear Hunter (from 1978) and everytime I saw Christopher Walken (very young at the time) all I could think of was "More Cow Bell!!!"... "I have a big headache, and the only remedy is More Cow Bell!"

Gee, I wonder why he even mentioned Cow Bell? It probably doesn't have a cow bell because they would have to give out Bruce Dickinson bobbleheads with every kit.

I glad I decided to hold out on rock band...the only real reason I wanted to get rock band was for the drums, glad i waited i love Guitar Hero

goldberg_evan

hopefully I can just play guitar hero 4 with just my regular guitar hero guitar. I don't want to shell out 200 for a game, that is specifically why I liked guitar hero better than rock band.
